Windows 10. Crap.

OK, i was gonna say 'fuck dell and fuck windows 10', but that seemed a bit harsh for a subject line.

Brand new Dell touchscreen laptop came with 8.1.
After stumbling around through that I got to an 'update' website.
(BTW, I'm posting with my old HP XP computer.)

Well, there were 147 updates.
Downloading took about 3 hours.
Evidently 8.1 has to be absolutely updated to down load 10.
That only took about 3 hours.

The 10 download took only about an hour and a half.
WooHoo.

Email?
Click on 'mail': "email not synced".
No clue as to how to sync it.
shit

You only have 30 days to go back to 8.1. After that time, your 8.1 license is no good and it won't work even if you restore your laptop to factory condition.

I don't think that is true. You wont be able to do a restore but you can install win 8.1 from a disk using your old license.

I could be wrong but I am fairly sure that is what happens.

Now I am going to have to look

edit to add

Is it true that the free upgrade to Windows 10 retains the properties of the license that was on the upgraded Windows 7 or 8.1 system? In other words if I am on an OEM system from a manufacturer such as Dell, HP, ASUS, Acer, etc. then the system that was upgraded with the free Windows 10 upgrade is still licensed as an OEM system? What if I bought a retail license that was purchased online or in a store - does the system upgraded to the free Windows 10 upgrade remain licensed as a retail license? (23 June 2015)

YES

The wording is unclear but I think retaining the properties means you can still install a fresh install of the old os you originally had licensed at any time. I believe that after 30 days they just delete the folder that had your previous windows instal on it that is kept when you upgrade.

We had to dump Windows a few years back, so buggy and needed constant attention and struggles to make it work.
Linux is such a joy.

from MS? can Linux use anti virus? and most important of all for my "favorite computer", can online games run with just Linux? I think most games use windows to make the UI? and the Lg. video cards need windows for their drivers to install?. Thanks, I think I'm stuck with windows

15. Linux has much less need for anti-virus because of the way it works.

And yes you can get antivirus for Linux.
On line games? The only people I know who are into any of the higher end games are my daughter and her boy friend. Most people are just not into the high performance games in the first place, on-line or otherwise.
NVIDIA is much more popular than Lg and Linux has few to no problems there. I don't know about Lg on Linux, as none of my computers use it.
I loaded Windows 7 on my main computer and it took me days to find all the drivers I needed. Printers, video cards, sound, camera software, etc. When I set up the Linux machine, a half hour for the install and downloading the up-dates and it was ready to go. There was no internet searching for drivers, the OS was smart enough to find what it needed by itself. A pop up window asked if you want to install whatever missing driver and a yes or no was all that was required.

I have 8.1 with Office 2013 including Outlook 2013. I may be misunderstanding you, but will Outlook not work on 10? Which actually brings on another question - will I have to reinstall office after the upgrade?

Thanks!

If you upgrade to 10, it should carry over all your account settings. It did for both my tablets that I upgraded to 10.

but I had to import them to Edge. I got all my OneNote notebooks and settings, so I don't see why your Excel settings won't transfer. Just do an export, just in case you can't recreate them easily.

Some upgrades have worked well, some have bad driver issues that cause crashes and need to be rolled back to win7 to work correct.

I still recommend Linux as a Windows replacement for anyone who is willing to take the plunge. It is very stable and easy to pick up these days.

I hate that, never give them your credit card number because the default setting is to auto-renew every year at full retail price.
