They do this every year to demonstrate the theoretical limit of consumer-grade computing power. Of course it's ridiculous overkill but to people like me, it's interesting to read. YMMV. It's also going to be outdated within a few years, as always.

Basically it's a folding@home machine that doesn't stutter no matter what else I'm doing on it.

I just cannot see what someone is going to do with that. Please don't tell me gaming. I could go to Vegas if I wanted to go gaming with that amount of money.
When I see this sort of stuff, I just laugh at the stupidity of some folks who think that they need all this crap.
I have been servicing PCs, and a small 2000 user network for more than 20 years now, and know that we could do it for less than what we are spending now. I just don't understand why anyone would waste that amount of money on that.
