Sanders responds to questions on 'ghetto' comment
The Vermont senator tried to explain on Monday.
"What I meant to say," Sanders said, according to an NBC News reporter, "is when you talk about ghettos, traditionally what you're talking about is African-American communities."
(Umm, All AA communities or just the poor ones Bernie?)
And then he grandiosly stated :
" no other presidential candidate has talked about poverty more than he has, nor proposed as specific ideas as his to address the issue of poverty."
Strrrreeeetching just a bit there, bernie

(50,580 posts)Which leads to the next question: if Bernie was so heavily into the plight of the Black Man (instead of just joining the Civil Rights Struggle because that was the cool thing for white socialists to do in the 1960s) why the hell did he move to the whitest place in America?
How can someone wanting to be president not know the first rule of holes?
SunSeeker
(51,783 posts)SNL used to brutalize Bob Dole over that in hilarious sketches.
But I can see why Bernie wants to detach himself from the person saying that "ghetto" stuff.

(9,313 posts)His clarification, based on the traditional use of the term, is actually correct. But, the traditional use is a problematic generalization, which I wish he had pointed out. Indicator of traditional usage found on Wikipedia:
I don't think there is much argument that his statements are not a problem. Clearly, the way he expressed himself was offensive to at least some of his potential supporters, intended or not. And that's a problem.
I'm not trying to smear. I'm a Bernie supporter. As such, I wish he hadn't expressed himself so unfortunately.

(68,867 posts)There are plenty of African-American communities that are NOT Ghettos...
I should know, I grew up in one, and it wasn't the only one
In fact, I would say that of the African-American communities in the US,
perhaps 20% if not less are considered Ghettos....and most of those are
the Government Projects.
What he did was to repeat a stereotype that Black folks live in ghettos.
If you don't understand the damage done with his statement,
there's not much more I can say.
