Dina Boluarte was virtually unknown on the Peruvian political scene a year and a half ago, when she rode into office in July 2021 as Pedro Castillo's vice-president.
But on Wednesday she made history -becoming Peru's first female president after Castillo was ousted from office amid an attempt to avoid an impeachment vote by dissolving Congress and ruling by decree.
A 60-year-old lawyer and mother, Boluarte became one of the Castillo government's best-known faces due to her position as Development and Social Inclusion Minister, a post she held simultaneously with the vice presidency up until two weeks ago.
Castillo, 53, who after being removed from office on Wednesday was detained on charges of rebellion, had sidelined Boluarte from his latest cabinet reshuffle - the fifth of his short presidency.

Perú's new President, Dina Boluarte, speaks to the nation's Congress upon being inaugurated yesterday.
Elected Vice President on a left-wing ticket led by Pedro Castillo, who was ousted after ordering Congress dissolved following his impeachment, Boluarte is the sixth president in as many years in the troubled South American nation of 34 million.

(160,656 posts)as well. Clearly the right-wing oligarchy which has controlled Peru throughout intends to get rid of her as quickly as it can. They don't care at all about appearances, their success in pitching out Presidents has strengthened their iron grasp of the Peruvian government until it's almost absolute. They have been relentless, even though people are more than aware of the criminality which has been driving them for decades.
It only takes a moment's reflection to recall that because of the hard-riding media control, nearly all information on Peru being absorbed outside ru has convinced the intellectually comatose majority that all support of the Peruvian power structure is right and moral, and whatever the oligarchy wants should be required, forever. Just as it has happened in every country which has been a beacon of racism of the highest degree, and shabby, ruthless right-wing power munchers.
You only have to acknowledge what we know about the right-wing's intentions for this country: to bury all efforts to educate US American students on any of the incredible real history of government and society racism, torment, extreme abuse, and vicious, cruel treatment of those without a voice, without power, without wealth.

Death squads, unimaginable levels of widespread crushing poverty, and malicious contempt for the indigenous, and African Peruvian people have governed all of the Peruvian government's history from the time the invaders arrived and started slaughtering the native Peruvian citizens. For anyone to support them is unforgivable. They have always beaten down everyone who tried to protect their victims, always. I won't defend them, not now, not ever.
People who don't understand any part of what has happened should not continue to expose their ignorance, even if it's usually only falling on the ears of their fellow sociopaths. Eventually the truth will be known, everywhere, the lights will come on, and there will be a lot of funny embarrassed faces.
This "President" is going to be catapulted out of office, as well. Just a matter of time.
Dina Boluarte has condemned herself personally by turning on the one who brought her there when she became frightened. Now she will still be reviled and sent packing, and she will also know she betrayed someone's respect for her.
