12.03.2016 Bruxelles
In response to an invitation from the Peruvian authorities, the European Union has deployed an Election Observation Mission (EOM) to Peru to observe the Presidential, Parliamentary and Andean Parliament elections on 10 April. This will be the third time that the European Union observes elections in Peru after 2001 and 2011 - which reflects the EU's sustained commitment to supporting the democratic evolution of the country.
Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, appointed MEP Renate Weber as Chief Observer.
The High Representative stated: "I trust that the forthcoming elections will further consolidate democracy in Peru. Under the leadership of Chief Observer Ms. Renate Weber, I am confident that the EU EOM will make an important contribution to this electoral process".
Upon her appointment, Ms Renate Weber declared "I look forward taking on my task as Chief Observer for the EOM to Peru. The EOM will provide an independent and impartial assessment of the elections. The EOM has arrived in Peru on 5 March and will closely follow all stages of the elections, including the campaign and will work in a transparent and cooperative manner with all Peruvian stakeholders".
