Quote for the Day:

It was, moreover, evident that as America's Cold War cement cracked, the economic side of the postwar bargain was also falling apart. The world's largest creditor nation in rapid order became the world's largest debtor nation. Hell-bent on profit, companies "downsized" and capital fled. Inequality mounted, and the public sector crumbled. The jolt was felt most acutely by the Americans who had least expected to lose momentum and were least equipped to manage a jolt to their expectations: precisely the middle – or would-be middle – classes who had drawn most advantage from the truncated American century of 1945-73. Undoubtedly, nobody is comfortable with a decline in living standards, but Americans may have been uniquely vulnerable because such things were not supposed to be possible here. If America is the dream, then in a certain sense, the end of the dream portended the end of the nation.
