New Jersey Introduces Annual EV Fee, Punishing Owners Who Go Green

With the stroke of a pen, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has unplugged the state's pro-electric-vehicle position, signing into law a new EV road tax that is the highest of its kind in the nation.

Starting in July, New Jersey EV owners must pay an annual $250 road tax fee in an effort to offset the state's loss in fuel tax revenue. The new fee will increase by $10 each of the next four years until it reaches $290 in 2028. To make matters worse, New Jersey requires buyers and leases of all new vehicles to pay four years of registration fees upfront and the new EV fee will be included in that initial payment.

Therefore, beginning in July, any new electric vehicle purchased or leased in New Jersey will cost $1,060 more than it does today. That's considerably damaging since the higher initial cost of an electric vehicle is one of the biggest impediments to EV adoption.

Giving with one hand and taking with the other. As it says later in the article, NJ gives up to $4k in incentives for buying an EV. I do agree with the road tax fee, though, and I presume if you pay the 4 years of registration up front, you're exempt for the other 3 years.

...a road tax needs to be equitably collected from people who use the roads.

Perhaps that tax should be untied from gasoline sales and simply charged to any vegicle registration as it is being done with EV registrations.

Anything else punishes people who drive lightweight vehicles for mostly short distances. If I own a car and it never leaves the garage, my road use tax should be ZERO.

I covered it here: A paper addressing the idea that electric cars are "green."

Now, I drive a hybrid car - my second, the first one was wrecked - that ran about $40K. I can afford it, which is why I don't expect poor people to subsidize me and my lifestyle. Dammit, we have people who can't afford a roof over their head; who can't afford food and we need to be paid to feel holy about owning a fucking car?

Here's what I had to say in my post about the absurd idea that poor people (including the cobalt miners in the Congo River region who subsidized my hybrid car with their bodies and blood) should subsidize the rich, relative rich (which I am) or obscenely rich.

Reality is unpopular.

Electric cars are no more sustainable than any other component of the car CULTure, and I have no patience for subsidizing any of it.

We need to subsidize our educational system so that people can think critically about rote sloganeering nonsense. I don't want to pay anyone to make Apartheid Elon (who used to be very popular here at DU) richer.

In New Jersey, as in many other places, electric cars run on at least partially coal and more prominently on natural gas. It's a disgrace, but its true.

You want an electric car? Then pay for it yourself.
