Related: About this forumWould I embarrass my friend?
I have a friend who is debuting his Drag Queen Persona in the area. He will be at this event and I (female-straight) wanted to go and support him but I was told by someone else that I would not be welcomed at said event and that I would make an ass out of myself.

I recall 2 movies where there were straights and gays in the crowd enjoying the shows. ('Torch Song Trilogy', and 'La Cage Aux Folles'.)

(16,862 posts)Are you going to jump up on the table and scream "Look at these! They're real!" while ripping off your clothes?
I fail to see how being there and clapping for your friend = making an ass out of yourself. I find that ridiculous. And who, exactly, would not welcome you? I think the only person there who needs to be welcoming is your friend. He is, after all, the one you're there for.

(16,862 posts)If it means that much to you then you should support the friend in the drag show, in my opinion.

I don't think I've EVER been to drag show where there weren't str8 women.
And at my age - I've been to a 'few'.

Nobody said you couldn't be drag-mom or a fan of your friend's work. The decision to show up should be between you two without someone trying to be messy in the middle.

(108,903 posts)I go to gay bars w/ my str8 women 'wing men' as often as i go w/ other gay men or by my self.
Lots & lots of gay men hang w/ str8 women.

(2,101 posts)Your friend is probably a bundle of nerves right now, and we all know how that helps us keep our wits together (not). Look at it this way and tell your friend - this is a one time thing, you don't want to look back and say 'well, you know I should have asked you to be there'. I'm sure your being there will cement your relationship going forward; lets all hope hitting the speed bump of his initial reaction to your insistance is recognized as the nothingness it is.

If anyone bitches about your presence, just blame D.U.

(11,550 posts)If this is your friend's first performance he will likely be nervous, and I'm sure seeing a friendly face in the crowd will help put him at ease a bit and make the show even better for him and everyone else.
Go, have fun, and support your friend. The "someone else" who gave you that advice has no clue what they are talking about.

Please go and support your friend. And suggest to "someone else" that they get a life.

(2,657 posts)just got an e-mail from the friend performing in the show saying that "EX-FRIEND" basically told him he was going to hell for his life style. I e-mail Drag Friend telling him I will be there than e-mailed EX-Friend and told her she's going to hell for her narrow-minded views and not to bother me anymore.
Never expected "EX-FRIEND" do be that much of a bitch.
Thank you all for your support. I thought I was doing the right thing but I wanted to make absolutely sure. I come from a very small town in PA and well my first "outed" friends came during my college years and well this would be my first Drag show I would be going to and considering I make Peggy Olsen-1st season Mad Men(episode 1) look like an experience woman (Gay friend's little joke to me and I know it is meant with love) I didn't know if I would do my friend more harm than good.

(27,670 posts)The ones I know are totally salty and insanely cynical-funny.
I've seen drag shows in dive bars, for free, that were so freakin' hilarious they'd be worth $200 a ticket in a major venue. Stuff that had me constantly ROFLMAO, mercilessly until it hurt.
Like others have stated previously in this thread, str8 girls have always been welcome at gay bars as far as I know and have ever seen
Drag queens often get straight girls to come up on stage, and they make these girls an unwitting part of their routine/performance.
(You've been warned)
Go on and have some fun!
