I just cancelled my Netflix account...
...seems they have more foreign language videos than English..and they do not indicate until you link onto the video.
If I wanted to read a movie I would buy the book!

(1,798 posts)I love the fact that they have so many french films, and french television series. I love Les Revenants (The Returned in English), and there are even Netflix original series in French - Marseilles comes to mind, which stars Gérard Dépardieu!

(95 posts)I once bought a bootleg DVD overseas that had 5-6 subtitles (Chinese, Thai, Tagalog, etc). All you could clearly see was the top of the actors heads!

(12,159 posts)We have watched a lot of foreign films with subtitles- when they are yellow it is very easy to follow. I don't like dubbed movies because you lose the emotion of the actors' voices. I really like when they are speaking a Romance language and are really excited. You don't need to know what they are saying to get the meaning.
Skittles
(153,226 posts)but subtitles are tough on my old peepers
so you have seen yellow subtitles? I haven't - only white
TexasProgresive
(12,159 posts)in the minority. Yellow just stands out more clearly to me. What the majority went with was white with black outlines. I haven't seen that so I can't say.

(153,226 posts)I don't mind watching a foreign film with subtitles (jeez, there are some excellent films out there), but it is very frustrating to constantly miss part of the dialogue

(34,135 posts)on DirecTV and I love it. I have tinnitus and hearing loss so I use it for everything and this is so much better. I still have to turn it up too much even with hearing aids so my husband complains less with the subtitles. I was so happy when I discovered the yellow letters.
TexasProgresive
(12,159 posts)I don't really understand those who hate the yellow. It is so clear and easy to read.

(60,026 posts)You don't even know you are reading subtitles after a few minutes in.
My complaint with Netflix is that so many of the movies they stream in general are the dregs.
the real horror is when the US decides to do a remake of a great foreign film - Mostly Martha, Shall We Dance - they didn't need to be remade (and badly)

(51,053 posts)but the original Swedish/Danish version is much better than the others. The title in English is The Bridge.
Borgen isn't a mystery but it's a fabulous series.
The original "Killing" on which the US version was based was called "Forbrydelsen." It was also MUCH MUCH better than the US copy.
"Trapped" was a series from Iceland that took everyone by surprise last year and won all kinds of awards - and deserved them!
There was a series last year with international backing called "Fortitude" which was a bit wacky, but very watchable. Set in a fictional Scandinavian outpost. Stanley Tucci and some other great people were in it. I'm watching season 2 now but it's not as good as season 1 so far.
Let me know how you like them. I'm a little jealous that you get to see them for the first time.

(1,946 posts)I did watch Fortitude and it had me going trying to figure out if it was some kind of sci-fi thing going on, or not. Where are you seeing season 2? Have I missed it on Netflix?
One of my favorites was Occupied. Excellent!! Really has you thinking about all the ramifications of what goes on. Especially now with Russia flexing it's muscles all over the place. There is supposed to be a season 2 for it also, and I can't wait.
I'll be checking out a couple of those you mention. Thx!

(51,053 posts)vidzi. I do subscribe to Netflix, but I didn't want to wait.
I haven't seen Occupied! Yay! A new one!
I follow a blog called "The Killing Times" https://thekillingtimestv.wordpress.com/ which lets you know when the British and the Scandinavian series air and gives reviews of them. I found out about a lot of these shows on there.

Mostly Japanese, Chinese and Korean...some Scandinavian, tsurkish, etc.
We all have different tastes, but if you eliminate any subtitled films, one is missing some of the greatest films ever made, for example, films by Akira Kurosawa..
Just my particular taste....

(2,892 posts)Just watched a sort of docu-drama called Journey To Greenland with audio in French and subs in English (not great but I liked it), as someone said...after a couple of minutes I don't really notice the sub titles, they do a good thing for me by forcing closer attention to the film, with old guy add my mind sometimes wanders or I am surfing while watching/listening to a standard English show or film...

(25,914 posts)They have plenty of movies and TV shows in English. While I personally have no problem with subtitles, I understand others may not like them.
There is a French TV show that I watched the first season of, reading the subtitles. The second season, no subtitles. My French, alas, isn't that good.
I think that many of the foreign language DVDs offer dubbed tracks, but I'm happy reading, so I don't bother.
Oh, also, sometimes I just cannot quite catch what someone is saying in English when watching something, and then I'll briefly turn on the subtitles in English to see what they're saying. Quite useful.
Also, I'm always watching on my computer, and there's a little icon to click on at the bottom of the screen that can instantly give me subtitles. Nice.

(17,650 posts)...on Netflix? You get used to reading. I always watch tv with closed caption on anyway. I need it for any BBC program. But I have seen some really good Foreign flix. I just have Netflix on TV and when you see the show it does tell you what language its in.

I only watched movies in English at first. It was so much easier Then I realized that most of the really good movies were in foreign languages, so I sucked it up and started watching movies in foreign languages. Just get over it!

like cable, there's not much, percentagewise, worth watching there. lots of documentaries. thanks for the headsup on the foreign, though; been pretty much ignoring them
