High temperatures expected to continue to July 15 as heat wave rolls over Japan
A heat wave continued to roll over Japan on July 13, with seven locations reporting temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius-plus, and 303 registering 30 degrees or higher as of mid-morning, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
Some of the worst heat was seen in the Sea of Japan side of the country, with 10:20 a.m. temperatures hitting 35.7 degrees Celsius in Yuzawa, Niigata Prefecture, 35 degrees in Uozu, Toyama Prefecture, and 35.5 degrees in Kanazawa. Central Tokyo recorded a temperature of 33.6 degrees.
A 95-year-old woman in Misato, Saitama Prefecture, and an 84-year-old woman in Shimizu, Hokkaido passed away on July 12 due to suspected heatstroke. Meanwhile, 98 people in Saitama Prefecture alone were taken to hospital with heatstroke symptoms.
The JMA projects high temperatures for the week will peak on July 13 and then continue until July 15, as Typhoon Nangka (the 11th of the season) approaches Japan from the south.
