2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumit looks as of now like it will be Hilary vs trump
it still blows my mind that this fascist is garnering so much support.
altho I am no fan of hilary, I hope that if this is the line-up- that people will vote dem in such numbers as to crush trump --
altho I am not very optimistic.
but that is my hope.

(34,195 posts)Heard some folks on CNN yesterday say,
if Trump is the GOP nominee, true conservatives may mount a third party try against Trump and Hillary.
And if the GOP establishment blocks Trump from getting the nomination, Trump may run as a third party candidate.
In any event, they were predicting a Democratic President and Senate elected in November.
But, you know what my mother always said.
You don't?

(30,481 posts)For once the media has done progressives a great service. They pumped him up and didn't vet him. That will change when we are down to two. People aren't aware of the baggage he carries and the things he is on video saying. His past makes his words in the primary look PC in comparison.

(3,864 posts)in NY someone threw scalding water on a Black man while yelling the "N-word". directly attributable to trump making hate and racism ok.
no it is not crystal night yet but for some people - Muslims for ex - it will be.

(58,785 posts)We have very good reason to believe The Donald has a strong personality disorder, ellenrr. He is not whole, normal person. It would be interesting to know what the effects of the presidency could be on a person like him. Cluster B traits can include some real nasty ones that I don't think we have any real indication of a history of in him. Yet.
Not that having a serious personality disorder excuses his fascistic tendencies, but they are in a whole different category from plastering his name 3 stories high everywhere he can get it and calling anyone who criticizes him even slightly a stupid doo-doo.
Kristallnacht. Is that like a tupperware party or something?

(3,864 posts)if people are willing to nominate someone who says, "I'd like to punch that protester in the face" they know everything they need to know and they still support him.

(58,785 posts)In Trump's case, we've had a long period of indulgence, of both noise and silence.
Some have thoroughly enjoyed his singing their racist song, they and others his four-story-tall expression of their angry resentment. Others I've spoken with, though, think he will stand between them and the nebulous forces of the "establishment" they finally recognize as their enemy. It's not all about bigotry and aggression.
That said, Republican and pub-leaning indie voters are now actually making their choice. Trump "won" 10 of 15 states yesterday, but only 34% of the vote. For all the noise surrounding Trump, two out of three Pubs have rejected him so far.
Which is about what one might expect. That number reliably always votes strong conservative and reliably supported W and Tea Party extremism until things got so bad for so long that even most of those fell away to a hard-core nadir of around 22%. I haven't read analysis on this, but it really looks like the the GOP "base" is choosing Trump and rejecting the shadowy ultraconservative billionaires who've been leading them around by the nose for so long. A Trump nomination could be very good for us and for the nation and potentially very bad for those plutocrats who are trying to strengthen their control over us.
Also good is that so far the less extreme and more responsible 2/3 is split away from the knuckle-dragging base, although who fools themselves that they will finally stay that way? Still,...could Trump conceivably cause a real fracture?
Aside from that long-needed event, I'm afraid the other 2/3 will manage to ignorantly nominate a competent and reliable tool of the wealthy under the impression that they are voting for a sensible mainstream conservative, and with it a seemingly more viable candidate for president.
