Related: About this forumAt what point does a candidate usually pick a VP running mate?
Is this typically done during the primaries or during the GE?
If it is not done in the primaries why not? Wouldn't doing so be a smart move to provide a boost to a candidate?

(18,402 posts)Usually days or weeks before the convention. A primary candidate must run on their own credentials, not someone else's. The VP announcement provides a boost for the convention--something new. Frankly, though, the VP doesn't make or break any ticket.

(54,770 posts)It could provide a boost for sure, but it's very risky before potential running mates are vetted and the political ramifications analyzed. Plus, I think waiting provides some leverage to candidates going into the GE.

(11,998 posts)While I understand the appeal of people thinking, "hey, what if Sanders announced Warren as his VP," in general, I don't think any candidate wants to tie him/herself into anyone early. Let every voter imagine their ideal VP candidate. Also, one's choice of running mate may depend in part on who gets the nomination on the other side. Finally, accepting a VP spot from someone who has not even be nominated may not be the best career move for that potential VP either, if the candidate loses.
