2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumCourage: Fox News to hold Democratic town hall with Bernie Sanders in Detroit
Live townhall on Fox News the night before the Michigan primary.
The event will be broadcast live beginning at 6 p.m. Monday from Detroit's Gem Theatre and will be hosted by Bret Baier. Sanders' rival in Michigan's Democratic primary the next day, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was invited to participate by Fox but said she had a conflict in her schedule and would not attend.

The other is that she is weak and ducking the hard questions Fox would ask her on her email problem, including the criminal investigation.
She managed to lose in 2008 and if this is indicative of what she is doing in 2016 she is on the road to losing again -- which I am fine with.

(10,558 posts)Just because they watch FOX News they have not abdicated their American citizenship! One would hope that you are not against an American politician reaching out to his or her fellow citizens wherever that politician can.
Dividing up the citizenry has worked well for those who do the dividing. The dividers have made great profits in keeping the citizenry at each other's throats and thereby distracted from witnessing how they steal our very democracy.
One would further hope that you are against those who would divide us, the time for divisiveness must pass! I would urge you to contact your candidate and suggest she speak her wisdom to FOX viewers-TO OUR FELLOW AMERICANS, just as Bernie is doing.
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)That's all.
chknltl
(10,558 posts)Each and every vote is precious, divisive responses like yours just now poison the well. There are plenty of Fox News viewers who are just as tired of watching their democracy slip away as we are. I urge you to retract your response to me, put me on ignore if you must, the divisiveness within our party, arguably the divisiveness within the electorate must end. Don't be a part of the problem, be a part of the solution!
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)Unless of course YOUR candidate can't get enough Dems to vote for him. Pathetic. I'm grateful Clinton seems to have enough respect for us to decline that crap.
chknltl
(10,558 posts)For far too long Fox News viewers have been divided from the (big "D" Democratic perspective...they are masters at dividing up the electorate. I believe in democracy, let's let the entire electorate hear what these two Democrats have to say. Do not be surprised if your candidate shows the wisdom I know she has and joins in. It would show no lack of respect for her supporters, it would otoh show a great respect for a segment of the electorate who might otherwise only know what they know about Hillary because Fox News told them so!
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)Didn't even know that wing existed until tonight. I guess anything Bernie does is okay with his supporters. But I'm actually a DEMOCRAT. So nope.
chknltl
(10,558 posts)Well I tried. At this point all I am left with is a hope that you reconsider your current position of pushing away fellow Democrats as well as fellow Americans. IMO it is better to be part of the solution than to be part of the problem. So...divide away I guess.
It is late for me, I've better things to do.

(7,304 posts)The folks that get most of their news from Fox most likely have not seen and heard Sen Sanders unscripted. Sen Sanders is at his best in this environment imo. Years of Brunch With Bernie have given him the mental agility to respond succinctly and confidently "off the cuff" and his passion and sincerity will, hopefully, impress this audience, many of who are also sick and tired of the corporations rigging the game, the bankers/Wall St fleecing us at every turn and the politicians that enable them.
Maybe some who see Trump's brashness and anti-establishment rhetoric as positives but recognize he's a crass buffoon may realize there's an alternative. They may even become receptive to Sen Sanders' "socialist" policies as a result.
I also think this is a bad move for Sec Clinton. She has to win over a lot of conservative leaning Independents and moderate Republicans if she's to win the GE in the probable event she wins the nomination and not participating in their beloved Fair And Balanced Fox News town hall will be held against her. Watch for Fox News to make it a big deal and just another reason among many GOP reasons to not vote for her.
I'm confident Sen Sanders will knock this out of the park and hopefully gain some support.

(104 posts)To be fair to Clinton, the smart political move on her part is to stay away from this. For Bernie, more exposure is the smart move, even if it is Fox. That being said, it still looks like she's a bit chicken to me, just saying. I had a republican friend of mine, register as a democrat, just to vote against Clinton. I don't think people realize just how many people don't like the Clinton(s). So in that context, it can only help Sanders peel off republicans and independents.

(18,672 posts)Why would the front runner want more debates? While it's possible she actually has something more important to do, what could she gain in another debate so soon? The underdog candidate always calls for more debates and Town Halls because they have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Eventually she'll have to face him again, but when Hillary starts calling for more debates you'll know her campaign is in peril.

(18,672 posts)I'm not cracking on Bernie here, but it's a traditional strategy to quit when one feels ahead of the game. There's nothing to gain a front runner in a political debate, but much to lose. That's why candidates who are behind always call for more appearances.
Meanwhile, Bernie may make some headway in a Town Hall by himself, or he may not, depending on how the random questions go. He can't slip into third place so the gamble is well worth it to him.

(3,160 posts)There is a large segment of the Republican party that would switch over if they heard Bernie. This is a great opportunity to broaden his base of support.

(9,977 posts)...I suppose it's good exposure. I will watch and hope Republicans see how adult candidates act.

(34 posts)..Bernie will pick up votes from R's after this for sure. I am one of the people who's mind he has changed on a lot of things. As a former Republican, I could NEVER vote for Hillary, because of all the lying,...but Bernie I could vote for, because even folks on the right eventually get fed up with the system as it is, and want change...ANY change.
