2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie Sanders doesn't sound much like a socialist.
From a 1985 interview -- just published in October 2015 by The Atlantic
...In 1967, his father died, and Sanders and his wife bought a small piece of land in Middlesex, Vermont. When I was a kid I always loved the country ... and when I used to go to Boy Scout camp, I would cry all the way home because I loved the trees and all. I had never been to Vermont in my life, but after I was married and after my father died and left us a few thousand dollars, my wife and I came to Vermont and located about 85 acres near Montpelier. It was just fantastic. I mean, I grew up in a three-and-a-half-room apartment, never owned a damned thing, and owning a piece of land I could walk on was just incredible! This brook is my brook! This tree is my tree!

Bernie Sanders sounds downright 100-percent American!

(7,661 posts)common with Bernie. Our beliefs, feelings and what we enjoy in life. It is nice to have someone run for POTUS I can really relate to. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

(1,021 posts)You should see the fits actual Marxists throw when anyone says "Oh, Bernie's a socialist."
I used to live near Middlesex. It is right next to Moretown. Used to be a joke: "Hey, did you hear they're going to merge Moretown and Middlesex? Yeah, they're calling it Moresex."

(2,655 posts)And, as I've been saying for months to anyone who'll listen, there is not ONE DAMN THING in his proposals that would sound odd coming from the mouths of Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, or Hell - even Eisenhower!

(180 posts)I've read posts from several high profile DU'ers that Bernie "ran away" to Vermont in his own version of white flight away from racially mixed communities. He completely abandoned all pretense of fighting for civil rights since his University of Chicago days. Heck, we're still not sure if that was even him (right, Capehart?).
If Bernie was a true champion of the people, he would have moved to Stone Mountain, Georgia. With all his support from the NRA, he would have had access to all the weaponry he needed to go "Rambo" on a few KKK rallies. Bernie could have single-handedly been the judge, jury and executioner to scores of racist scumbags in a hail of bullets. Such is the amazing power of this man.
Alas, he just wanted a nice place in the woods to breathe clean air and raise a family. Humanity's loss.
