2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumPerils for Bernie staying in.....and why he won't "come back"
-- His donations will dwindle. No one wants to contribute to a losing proposition. The only ones who will continue to donate are the true believers that are having a hard time facing the reality of him being over 300 pledged delegates behind and 700+ total delegates behind. As he loses more states (AZ next) this will spiral. This is what happened to Jeb, and Christie, and Ben Carson, etc.
-- His turnout will be depressed, especially in caucus states where so much time needs to be invested to participate. I still think he will win a few caucuses, but the blowout he needs just will not materialize.
-- A lot of his support comes from kids, and my personal observation is that among these kids he is the current political fad. Losing will instantly make him uncool. What he may have going for him with the kids is that they just don't understand the delegate math. In fact, many seem to think Dems have a winner take all system in each state instead of the proportional system we have. So, if he is lucky it will take a while before they absorb the idea that he is not going to make a comeback. At some point the adults will follow the same phenomenon. No one wants to vote for a loser.
-- The media will start to actively ask why he is staying in the race. At that point he begins to look foolish. I really do not like Bernie for many, many reasons, but I hope this does not happen to him.

I got one strike, mostly because I haven't posted much here and didn't know that there were "protected" groups where you could only talk nice about a candidate. I chose the threads I read/replied based on the front page and the "latest threads" tab, so I really didn't know/understand the "group" concept used here. Hard to tell them about democratic principles when you support a candidate that supports, fracking, the death penalty, perpetual war, private prisons. I would understand why they are confused about the democratic party when the current delegate leader in the democratic party is a Rockefeller republican at best.

(135,425 posts)He doesn't just need to win, he needs sustained blowouts in states that have a decent number of delegates. I don't see that happening. I don't see him bringing it home in a big way in places like NY (where Clinton is a known quantity, having tromped all over that state and knowing it better than many governors) or neighboring CT, or PA.
You've got to bring it home in diverse states with dense population centers. Sanders never cracked that code. I can't see him doing it at this late stage of the game.
We'll slog on, but the end result, after a fair amount of wailing, teeth gnashing, threats, promises, invective, rancor, tears and recriminations, is that Clinton will be our nominee, and Sanders, unless he wants to fall on his sword and bleed out, will stand up on that convention stage and give her a robust, full-throated endorsement.
And she could do worse picking him as her Labor Secretary. That would free up his seat for Shumlin to grab, and it would allow him to pursue the issue nearest and dearest to his heart. Win-win.

As for a cabinet post, I say no to any slot. There is a reason his colleagues have not endorsed him. The ones I know say he is very hard to work with.
MADem
(135,425 posts)And he'll never get ANYTHING done if he doesn't play ball with the legislature.
Also, Shumlin could run for his Senate seat, putting a reliable "D" in his slot, while he finishes out an honorable career of public service at Labor.
I think there's a lot to recommend the idea. Of course, it's all down to who the POTUS wants to put in that cabinet seat.
MaggieD

thartic
(49 posts)Are you a mind reader? I think he's as surprised as everyone that he has made it this far.
Please look into his record before you insult his accomplishments. Here are some points to consider.
1. He co-created in 1991 the now largest democratic congressional membership organization, the Progressive Caucus.
2. While a congressman with Republican's running the country in 1994 he became known as the "Amendment King", two of his biggest achievements,
"When the Affordable Care Act was in danger of not having the votes to pass, Sanders used his leverage to win enough funding for free health treatment for 10 million Americans through Community Health Centers. This gutsy moveholding out until the funds were put into the billhas even Republican members of Congress requesting the funds, which have helped millions of Americans who otherwise would not have access.
Another moment came when Sanders, who was then chair of the Veterans committee, worked with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), to overhaul the Veterans Administration. McCain praised Sanders' work on the bill in an interview with National Journal. Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) even went so far as to say the bill would never have passed without Sanders' ability to bring the parties to a deal."
3. They won't endorse him because they are scared, they like their jobs, and they can't count on small donors because they rely on outside interests (part of the truth). They also, think, probably correctly, that Hillary will be the nominee and even if she loses, Bernie won't hold it against them, whereas Clinton would probably blacklist them.
I await your reply eagerly.
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)I have followed the campaign closely. He and his supporters just don't seem to comprehend why he hasn't caught on. It is obvious to a lot of us - particularly, AA, women, and LGBT people. His is so completely tone deaf on these issues.
And I promise you are wrong about why he is not being endorsed. No one is scared. No one. It's the same reason he has never been able to get anything accomplished in congress. He is a cold, arrogant, person, and he simply does not work well with people. Dennis Kucinich was the same way, by the way.
Listen to the rethugs talk about why they do not like Ted Cruz. Same thing.

(49 posts)TONE DEAF?? Are you a troll? Hillary didn't publicly accept gay marriage until 2013. He has a better rating from the HRC. He's been pro-choice for 40 years and was arrested for fighting public school education in the 1960's. How is he "tone-deaf"????

(20 posts)Without doubting its good intentions, I find the original post malarky.
First, Bernie will stay in the race right up to the convention, just as Hillary did in 2008. He is committed to his ideas (what he has been fighting for for decades) and to his enthusiastic grassroots supporters.
While those supporters wished for Bernie to have garnered majorities in all of Tuesday's contests, many of them began supporting Bernie when the idea that he might win as many states as he has already was pie-in-the-sky dreaming. They aren't going to walk away from him now. When it is announced how many new small-dollar donations came into the Sanders campaign today, it will probably make the Clinton fundraisers' heads spin.
It is a short-sighted idea for Hillary or her supporters to wish for Bernie to drop out. If she wants to start engaging full-time with Trump right now, she should be careful what she wishes for. I personally don't think she is ready for that. Also, she should be grateful for how much her own campaigning has improved since she's had to encounter Bernie in debates. Prior to that, how lackluster her campaign was had become a repeated topic among even the most even-handed political pundits.
Also, if Hillary is so confident that nothing is going to keep her from becoming selected as Democratic presidential nominee, then she has the debates between now and the convention to respond to Sanders supporters in ways that will inspire their support, well not just their support -- their enthusiastic support. If Democrats are going to triumph over the Trumplicans, not only for the presidency but in retaking both houses of congress, Hillary will need every Sanders supporter fully behind her.
Bernie has already said that he will support the Democratic presidential nominee (even if it isn't him), but some of his supporters might need some specific questions Hillary isn't being forthcoming about answered first. This would also make her a stronger candidate when she has to debate whatever disgusting Republican is chosen.
So quit complaining about Bernie, and get to the job at hand: fully discussing the issues important to all Democrats, not only to those who have been supporting Hillary since 2007 (who only need her to smile and wave at them).

(6,409 posts)The "kids" are too stupid to comprehend the system, and the "adults" will get tired of following a loser. All this heavy political theory makes my head hurt. My degree in political science didn't prepare me for this level of discourse.

Sounds like something that came out of the Trump campaign.
