2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIf I were a GOP operative, I'd try to stir up factional rivalry among Dems
Because divide-and-conquer is ALWAYS a winning strategy.
Republicans must be licking their chops watching Dems insisting that the opposing Dem candidate is so odious that they will not vote for him or her no matter what.
Because if enough potential Democratic voters get turned off and stay home on election day--or write in a name that has zero chance of winning--Republicans WILL win.
Like they won in 2010 and 2014. Look what that did to the Demcratic majorities that had been in the House and Senate after Dems unified behind a candidate and turned out in record numbers in 2008. After the disasters of 2010 and 2014, Republicans now have majorities in both Houses of Congress and many state legislatures, as well as governorships of many states. The Democratic president can get only a fraction of his agenda enacted because he has no control over Congress. He can't even get a Supreme Court nominee appointed.
And as a result of the 2010 election, the GOP got to redraw congressional district maps to give themselves a massive leg up in all future congressional elections for this decade.

I hope the Democratic party has somebody lined up to get the "coronation" because if Bernie doesn't win the nomination, we are absolutely screwed if there isn't a backup.
It scares the shit out of me that we could potentially be looking at "President Cruz".

(3,660 posts)to insultingly call the supporters of one candidate "BernieBros". Or to accuse them of various things such as racism, bigotry, misogyny, etc...
Oh wait.
"Yes, I have heard about it. It's disgusting," Sanders replied. "Look, we don't want that crap. We can and we will do everything we can, and I think we have tried. Look, anybody who is supporting me, is doing sexist things is we don't want them. I don't want them. That is not what this campaign is about."

(2,379 posts)FEAR, FEAR, FEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The fault lies with the Dem. party pushing a candidate with unfavorable ratings so high that the ONLY way she would win is by playing the fear card and trying to get people to hold their noses and vote for someone they don't trust or like.

(10,650 posts)She needs more independents that she can get. Her only hope is massive voter turnout that trends to her.

(11,366 posts)What matters are the Independents - they make up 40 percent of the electorate. Both Dems and Republicans make up abotu 30 percent, each (Dems are slightly more).
And, they don't like Hillary.

(90,371 posts)... has sunk their teeth into.
There maybe 10% true independents on a national level that will cross in a regular election.
When it comes to trump it looks like that number goes up to 15%

(3,825 posts)Zealotry always overcomes rationality. Hopefully we will come through this in one piece. To destroy ourselves because we like two different candidates is the definition of insanity. You are so right, when the GOP got to redraw congressional districts to give themselves unbeatable incumbents, we were asleep at the wheel. We need to rebuilt from the bottom up and run people who will work to restore the balance in the system, independent panels that redraw state districts. We will have another census coming up in 2020, and that is a really important goal to accomplish. Both Bernie and Hillary would do this, but without a 60 vote firewall, they will not accomplish what they want, I know that, I wish they did.

(8,548 posts)I am firmly convinced that many of the insulting posts on DU are not from Democrats
When W was President, I used to get these emails from my super conservative cousin. The emails she forwarded to me were supposedly written by ordinary people. Come to find out, many were composed by people who were paid to write them to look as though they were written by ordinary people.
I think that someday we will learn that some of these super rich people like the Koch brothers paid people to do the same kind of thing on DU and other websites because you are right: the Koch brothers and their ilk are the ones who will benefit if a Republican is in the White House.

(47,209 posts)and have never seen a candidate they assumed was perfect. We know the system sucks, and try to work to change it at the local level. We don't fool ourselves that staying home and posting on the net accomplishes much at all.

(11,366 posts)Bernie supporters will either write his name in, vote for Jill Stein and some - Independent voters who are ardently anti-establishment - will vote for Trump (although, they won't go with Cruz).
And, yes, that would be revolutionary: not supporting the establishment candidate.

(1,976 posts)but call its members Dems. I'd then hijack the power structure of the Dem Party and chase the same corporate money as Repubs.
Of course, I'd also pursue the policy preferences of my new big-money donors. Then, when the takeover is almost complete, I'd question the loyalty of any Dems that are still challenging the new status quo.
