2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumToday Limbaugh explained that "loss of 28 sponsors" is meaningless
he tried to claim that all the sponsors were local affiliate ad-buys, but I know he's lost national sponsors.
Using the "local sponsors" tac, he said there are 600 stations; each station has about 30 advertisers; so that's 18,000 sponsors. Therefore the loss of 29 or 32 is no big deal.
He did not address the loss of national sponsors, but I'm sure his listeners were completely reassured.
He's reassured his listeners that this is just the left trying to get him off the air, but claimed that no revenue for the show had actually been lost.
He also said some of the people who left are asking to come back, and that he had 3 new sponsors whose ads will appear in the next week or so.

(15,667 posts)Wow to anybody familiar with ad buys, looks like there's a lot of space on his ad roster -- a really hot show you have to buy in advance for the following quarter.
At least one of them is.

(10,419 posts)Thank you NAO for reporting. I can't bring myself to listen to that psychotic blowhard, but I need to keep abreast of his latest horsehockey, which is why I guess we have DU.
Can you believe this is going on in this day and age? Ugh!!!

(23,664 posts)600 stations 30 advertisers each, that may be true. But I'll bet at least 25 of them are the same for all 600 stations.
And even if you buy his math, the fact that he has 3 new sponsors coming on (out of 18,000) is pretty pathetic.

(13,468 posts)Like the companies that sell huge supplies of non-perishable food to store in preparation for end of the world scenarios (or the re-election of Obama, whichever comes first). That would probably go over quite well with his audience. The old compound surely needs that sort of thing.

(49,038 posts)Some of the advertisers claiming they dropped him weren't advertising on his show anyway. Netflix, for instance, just buys air time from syndicates who divide their time up based on what slots are premium or late night or whatever. They will just say "don't advertise on Rush," and the syndicates will spread them elsewhere while taking in the same amount of money. They will fill in Rush's slots with other ads. Rush is too popular and carries too much clout for the syndicate as a whole, so far, so they won't dump him now.
What might hurt him more, though, is the popular idea that he went too far this time. The fact that advertisers are forced to drop him for PR reasons means that politicians will also not want to be seen with him, and that in an election year. That weakens his pull, and that weakens his overall usefulness to his funders. THAT may be the beginning of the end for him, and that also makes the whole game harder on Republicans, who since 08 have been battling an increasing awareness from voters that they are out of touch and just plain obnoxious. Rush's real problem isn't advertising, it's his image.

(31,706 posts)He's always been on during the mid day slot...one of the lower rated and least advertised day part. His appeal is to get people to listen at work or in the car...set the local hate station and hope thsee people tune in during the more coveted morning and afternoon drives where the local stations make the most money.
Also, just as in the case with Faux, Clear Channel/Premiere is a large corporation that can shift their money around...take a loss on rushbo that helps keep hundreds of dying AM stations relevant. Piss off listeners and these stations could be devestated and Clear Channel will do whatever they can to protect this "asset" (emphasis on ass)...not even suspend him.

Er, well sir... Unfortunately they aren't sponsoring your program. The National Organization of Women has an idea that's lighting up the marketing department. So we're gonna have to cut you down to a half hour because you just can't get the sponsorships that NOW is offering us.

Hey! Business is business. This is a done deal and if you don't like it look for another network, if you can find one that will take you. Good night, Mr. Limbaugh.
