New Poll finds Obama leading Romney among women by 17-points

Among women, President Barack Obama leads Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney by 55%-38% in the Economist/YouGov poll (Week of 3/17/2012). That 17-point deficit among women right now is too much for Romney to overcome, as Romney leads Obama among men by 45%-43%.

Right now, it is Newt Gingrich and even Rick Santorum (not so much Romney) who are the real lightning rods for women angry at Republicans in general. For example, among women, Romney is viewed favorably by 36% and unfavorably by 46% of women. By comparison among women, Santorum’s standing is 30% favorable rating and 50% unfavorable, and Newt Gingrich’s standing among women is 22% favorable-60% unfavorable. (Obama is 50% favorable-42% unfavorable among women.)

The GOP is so weak among women I wonder if Mittens will try putting a woman on the ticket with him in hopes he can begin to turn it around?

1. If Romney gets the nomination that gap will widen.

Rmoney is no more pro-women than any of the other candidates, he just hides his misogyny better.

2. To put that into perspective: In 2008, Obama won the women vote 56-43

He did win the male vote by 1 point in '08, but that's all statistically irrelevant when you factor in his 17-point edge among women (who made up 54% of the voting population in '08 and have made up a majority of the voters in the last seven elections).

and you HAVE to figure it will only increase in 2012 w/the GOP's relentless war on women....Obama will win the African American vote probably 95-5 (Gore, Kerry were in mid 80's) and he's likely to win Hispanic vote by a very large margin to....

is going to go with Kay Bailey Hutchison.

She's from Texas and Rmoney is going to think that having a Southerner will help jack up the excitement down there that is severely lacking whenever his name is mentioned. She's not running for re-election this year and has pondered the thought of running for President in the past.

The media likes to tout her as somewhat of a moderate, correctly or not, and that might hurt this possible ticket as most pukes think of Rmoney himself as too moderate.

5. These polls on demographic make me wonder about the national Obama vs. Romney polls.

Obama leads by almost 20% with women.

Obama leads with 95%+ of African Americans.

Obama leads by 70% to 15%?? among Latinos.

Yet, he only leads by a couple of points overall. Are we really supposed to believe that white men make up that big of the difference?

Doesn't seem possible.

6. Well...he leads Romney 49-42, which is almost identical to his 2008 margin over McCain...

In '08, he won the male vote by only one point (loses it by two in this poll) & the female vote by 13 - so, 4 more points over where he won it in '08. So, all things considered, the margin seems about right. Add the MOE and it's possible he would win a hypothetical election by 10 or so points using the demographics of this poll.

That sounds about right, IMO.

Of course that could backfire on them and their corporate masters. If President Obama is lagging in the "polls", it will make sure that more people go out and vote.

is the same as Mitt Romney. It's not true! And the Obama camp will have to work to draw stark contrasts between the two candidates or they will lose this election!

I can't understand how any woman would be for Romney, or any republican. Everything the republicans stand for pretty much is aimed at putting women back to where they were in the 50's. It is sickening, I may not be a "natural" woman, but I identify myself as one, and someday will complete the change to be one, so women's interests are important for me.
