(94,950 posts)Not saying he's right, but it's not unreasonable to surmize that having the President's major political achievement (which rightly or not isn't very popular), struck down would have a negative impact on your re-election, and thus would benefit your opponent.
If you disagree, it might be helpful if you offered a counter-argument.

(20,450 posts)ACA. Repealing the law takes away a talking point for Romney.
Better news: According to Melissa Harris Perry (and I agree with her) is that repealing the mandate opens the door to a public option.
Cosmocat
(14,584 posts)A repeal is a MAJOR blow to health care reform, to president Obama and to the democratic party.
The Ds had the biggest majority in the House and Senate that they will see in a LONG time, and they BARELY, by ONE single, post dated reconcilation vote, squeeze this version though.
It was 14 years from the time the Clintons tried to get HCR done, failed, and took a beating in the next mid term election, and 20 years before that when Nixon tried to do something.
A repeal gives the Rs a MASSIVE victory that the media will be more thabn happy to beat Obama up over the next 8 months.
You think a REPUBLICAN House and likely senate are going to pass public option?
That is BEST case scenario with Obama as president.
Liberal_Stalwart71
(20,450 posts)"You think a REPUBLICAN House and likely senate are going to pass public option?"
Where did I write or even imply this? My argument has always been that if we work harder for a *progressive* Democratic majority in BOTH chambers of Congress, we just might see a public option in our lifetime. I stand by that argument. When I stated that I agreed with MHP, that's only under the condition that we have progressive majorities, and I'm sure that that's what she also meant.
However, I do like this article from Robert Reich:
Healthcare Jujitsu: A Path to Medicare for All
by Robert Reich
March 27, 2012
So why not Medicare for all?
Because Republicans have mastered the art of political jujitsu. Their strategy has been to demonize government and seek to privatize everything that might otherwise be a public program financed by tax dollars (see Paul Ryans plan for turning Medicare into vouchers). Then they go to court and argue that any mandatory purchase is unconstitutional because it exceeds the governments authority.
Obama and the Democrats should do the reverse. If the Supreme Court strikes down the individual mandate in the new health law, private insurers will swarm Capitol Hill demanding that the law be amended to remove the requirement that they cover people with pre-existing conditions.
When this happens, Obama and the Democrats should say theyre willing to remove that requirement but only if Medicare is available to all, financed by payroll taxes.
If they did this the public will be behind them as will the Supreme Court.

(20,450 posts)this thread are passing thoughts, not what I *think* will indeed happen.
Still, I hope that we progressives/liberals at least try to work hard.
Cosmocat
(14,584 posts)First, they could not even let the Bush tax cuts EXPIRE.
The supreme court strikes down the mandate, and the Rs and the media will completely destroy President Obama.
He will have absolutely NO political capital under any circumstance, much less going into his reelection, to try to play some kind of power play like this.
He WILL be framed as a WEAK president, and Ds in the house and senate who are facing reelection will NOT back this, because they know they will get beat up for "BACKING THE PRESIDENTS UNCONSTITUTIONAL POWER GRAB!"
Public will back TAX HIKES? Are we talking about the United States of America?
The Rs, and the media WILL drive the debate as HCR FAILED, and in these tough economic times we should just go back to what we have now, which is working just fine.
Second - We can work all we want for a progressive majority in the house and senate. It is not happening. Not in our lifetime. Again, we have seen the high tide for democrats in the house/senate for some time. We simply are not going to see that number. And, whatever our thoughts are, there are always going to be "blue dogs" in the mix. There simply are too many 50/50 rural seats that can be won by a tempered democrat that just can not be won by a "progressive."
Look - while WE know single payer is the common sense answer, we face an electorate that is VERY subject to being misled, and an opposition that is VERY eager to mislead.
We just barely got HCR done, by one post dated reconciliation vote in the senate, it is a hair away from being unraveled - and it is the REPUBLICAN plan from the battle on this 14 years ago.

(24,454 posts)Where are the "freedom fighters" filing lawsuits against that law? I might have missed it but I have not heard ANYBODY from Massachusetts on the right complain about having to buy health insurance there. They might say that it shouldn't matter b/c it is a state law not a federal law but what is the real difference when it comes to the mandate?
Arkana
(24,347 posts)Massachusetts is dominated by Democrats, including the highest court. A lawsuit against a bill that has given us the highest percentage of insured people in the nation (something like 97%) would get laughed out of the room.
Proud Liberal Dem
(24,454 posts)but then, once people realize what new stuff they have that is suddenly taken away from them, it may create some unpleasant headaches for the Republicans in the near short long-term. They should be careful what they wish for- like an actual official end to Roe V. Wade. Yeah, the anti-choice movement will rejoice for a few days until Planned Parenthood and its allies start taking it to the streets and state legislatures and the ballot boxes in the next election. Likewise, drop-kicking PPACA will warm the hearts of the Republican Tea Party but there are still lots of people whom want to see health care reform and won't be content to just go back to the way things were on 03/22/10.
