The GOP wants Kerry to go for SoS.
It is a great oppertunity for the GOP to pick up that senate seat.
President Obama would play right into their plan.

1. My opinion: It was reverse psychology to get Rice in & keep Kerry in Ma, because he's the one

they actually do not want and, if you'll look at his committees and seniority, you may have some idea of why that might be in an environment in which oil and alternative energy are amongst the top issues.

As far as what might happen in MA, I think you should consider if your are correct or not in counting Kerry's legacy in that state as 0, grassroots & organization wise, especially after such a really bad Romney loss.

I was here on DU the night of 9/11/12, very late or very early depending upon how you look at it. In those wee hours, someone brought pictures of the people of Libya in the streets with signs morning and honoring Ambassador Stevens. That was the first that I heard that he had been killed. Those families in the streets with their home-made signs made me cry and I think they point to something very unusual that had happened there. Something quite different from corporate media propaganda that eventually got turned into McCain's theatrical assault upon a nomination that not only had not even been made, but for which no one had even said that Susan Rice was on any kind of list for consideration for the position. What's your opinion of that fact: PO never even said she was any kind of special consideration for SoS.

DU may have been suckered by John McCain, but President Obama was NOT.

Would you mind fleshing this idea out a little more for me? This is the first time I have seen an explanation like yours.

You're saying that the GOP tried to dare the President to appoint Ms. Rice, because they did not want Kerry to be chosen? This really makes a lot of sense, given their vehement reaction to a possible nomination to Ambassador Rice. I had also thought that the President had never formally discussed a nomination of Ms. Rice; thanks for confirming that for me.

It also seemed like the GOP were, in a way, "protesting too much" in regards to a nomination of Rice. I had also considered that their obstruction, for obstructions' sake, would be made much easier with a Rice nomination, as opposed to Sen. Kerry. I would think that his path to confirmation would be far smoother than a Rice nomination; hence, they could have spent months grilling Rice, and spouting talking points against her nomination, and also the President, every day on the talk shows. With a Kerry nomination, not so much.

So, once again, the President eats the Republican's lunch. This time, by his refusal to fall into some kind of Wile E. Coyote trap (Acme) that they thought they could use to catch him. Smooth move, Mr. President!

4. At minimum, they get the benefit of getting to say, and getting OTHERS to say, that PO is "soft".

Even failure on a Rice SoS project would result in: Rice is Black and female, consider the disappointment.

Why not take advantage of a hypothetical PO desire to say, TTE, "Nothing ir-regular about Benghazi, see? I like Susan Rice" by suggesting her negatively.

Republican aversion to Kerry: Does anyone really think a guy like John Kerry, just went home to lick his wounds and try to forget what happened in Ohio in '04. If I were a Republican of a certain stripe, I'd be pretty nervous about the guy.

I'm also remembering Kerry's long-standing work to organize alternative energy, the Apollo Project, which was part of The Real Deal in '04 - AND - how a pretty respectable Republican, Lawrence Wilkerson, backed him that year in saying that the greatest threat to US security is environmental, and hence energy, not the War on Terror.

At minimum they'd have some real interest in confusing the political context around Senator Kerry and, with they way that PO plays everything so close to his chest, what would be the sense of screaming about him and, thus, telegraphing their own hand?

How would the GOP pick up a seat? who would Governor Patrick appoint? or am I missing something?

(on edit) my mistake- there would be a special election- I forgot how Scott ended up there in the first place
