2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumFolks, that new swing state poll wasn't good news for any of our candidates. Better be an outlier
And it looks like it is certainly differing from other similar polls. Most recent I could find was Virginia:
Poll released today showed Clinton trailing Bush by 3, Walker by 3 and Rubio by 2. Last Thursday, PPP released a Virginia poll that shows Clinton leading Bush by 8, Walker by 5 and Rubio by 4.
Methodologies differ between pollsters. One poll in any direction is not representative. Time to start worrying is if other pollsters begin showing the same shift away from Democratic candidates (Again, the new Quinnipac poll shows all three of our top candidates losing to all three Republicans in all three states).
My guess is we will see some other outfits now rush to poll those same states to either confirm the shift or contradict it (Either way they still get some publicity). I would expect to know in a couple weeks whether this is truly an outlier at this stage of the election season.

*Outside of DU. Want proof? The Washington Post is barely covering anyone's campaign. They feature an article a day on someone.

(6,437 posts)But it doesn't just show that for her but for all our top candidates. So, if you're taking polling at this point seriously, then you better hope it an outlier.

(20 posts)Why reinvent the wheel? Horse racing tracks know that the closer the horserace, the more mileage they get at the betting windows. The breathless announcers make it seem as if it could be ANYBODY's race. It comes down to the wire, with excitement and drama galore. The people who make money when it's close know that when they run the "sure thing", their profits fall.
ALL media are highly invested in making it look for every day of the next year and a half, it could be anybody's presidency. Polls will be contracted, breathless on-air announcers will handicap and speculate and, when appropriate, tear their hair that the ... gasp! ... WRONG GUY is getting all the coverage. It's so silly, because it's THEY THEMSELVES who decide who gets the coverage.
It's all a game, and a very profitable one. FOX even learned how to get the focus shifted from the "early primary states" to themselves and their "debate".
The best plan, to avoid this predictable and silly "roller coaster" of a horse race is just to stay calm until there are serious developments in the race for the presidency. Oh, keep watching. It's the greatest show on earth. But don't take any of it seriously.
