The Hunting of Hillary - A Conversation with Joe Conason

An uneasy sense of déjà vu comes over me when reading some of the Times coverage, I’m sorry to say. It is troubling to see the Times—still the best and most important American newspaper—continue to publish hostile, unfair, and inaccurate articles about the Clintons, both Hillary and Bill...

Now we are seeing the same old process repeated: Reporters at the Times are leading the assault on Hillary Clinton, with inaccurate stories and slanted leaks from House Republicans on the Benghazi select committee, to cite the sorriest example. Then Fox News and the rest of the right-wing noise machine amplify those erroneous stories, along with much of the mainstream media, which still tends to follow the lead of the Times. That was exactly the pattern during the ‘90s, when the Times first gave its imprimatur to the bogus Whitewater "scandal" as if it were another Watergate—and came to rely heavily on leaks from Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr. The Times was not alone in that vein of scandal coverage—many other media outlets were equally culpable...

To be honest, very little surprises me any more when it comes to the topic of the Clintons. What is disgraceful, however, is the willingness of the critics to smear thousands of employees of the Clinton Foundation around the world who have done extraordinary work to save and improve lives of the sick, the poor, and the powerless...

The way that the Times Washington bureau handles Trey Gowdy is all too reminiscent of the way that major media outlets, including the Times, dealt with Ken Starr during Whitewater. Again, we cover this in detail in The Hunting of Hillary, but the short version is that Starr, like Gowdy, leaked to selected reporters—and those reporters never noticed any problems with his "investigation." At least ten investigations of the Benghazi tragedy have been completed, including a few overseen by congressional Republicans, and none have substantiated any of the wild wing-nut accusations against Hillary Clinton. The only truly useful investigation—an Accountability Review Board convened by the State Department—disciplined a number of officials, some with fairly harsh sanctions.

I hope I did this correctly. Joe Conason is a national treasure, a frequent guest on Al Franken's late, lamented Air America show. This is a great read, IMHO.

I own The Hunting of the President and Fools for Scandal, and would happily have bought this book, but it's only a file. So I downloaded The Hunting of Hillary, and then, as you will understand if you're a Mac user, I found it on my computer and put it where I can find it. I feel almost ready to rent a movie, or stream one, or perhaps both (I really don't understand all the ways to procure movies).

At any rate, Conason and Lyons are among my heroes, and I will read anything either of them writes anywhere, because they didn't catch the fever that felled the rest of the nation's media in 1992. Instead, they stood back and said "What the Eff?" and started checking facts. Since they are both actual journalists, they were able to distinguish gossip from news, and perceptively explained what was going on. Explained it with footnotes.

Thanks for bring in the interview, and remember, there's a book out there too.

I wished someone could explain to me why the NYT
is gaining from this. Are they not embarrassed enough
by always claiming that their sources are at fault. If so,
then their reporters don't do the hard fact checking.

Give me a break, first they had to backtrack Judy
Miller's war story, and now they have to do the same
with the Clinton story.

How does that help the paper in any way?

It is piss poor journalism indeed. I don't know what they gain but the media's rightward swing is unarguable.

Thanks for posting.

is seeing the same right wing Hillary Hunting going on here - brought here - and pushed here - by a number of DU members.

I believe Hillary is a better candidate than Bernie by far but I haven't pointed out the deficits I see in Sanders. I keep them to myself knowing how they would be taken by his fans.

I've always liked and respected Sanders for who he is and where he has established a comfortable independent seat for himself. I've been grateful for the votes/support he has almost always offered the Democratic party. But that's not enough, IMHO.

I doubt the authenticity of at least half his DU supporters here. And I shake my head at the others who do not shut down the right wing hunting of a democratic candidate. Any Democratic candidate.
