And every time I get in my car, I am as proud of it as the day I first applied it!
My specially commissioned Clinton/Castro 2016 bumper sticker is proving to be a good investment. Hillary Clinton and Julian Castro are still the winning ticket. Sorry I can't give you a link to the bumper sticker itself (I had it specially made) but here is a very similar button that you can now purchase online. If you are looking for a political accessory with lasting value, you can not go wrong with Clinton/Castro. It will take you all the way to the 2020 elections.

(23,156 posts)Who the hell is Julian Castro?
I consider myself reasonably savvy in politics, but I haven't a clue who he is. Not a very good recommendation for a potential VP pick.
Let's see, I know who Fidel Castro. He has a brother. And there's a Castro who was a political figure in Arizona politics for quite a while. Julian? Not so sure about him.
I'm openly admitting my ignorance, but this is a good example of why no one here should ever assume that everyone else knows who or what they are talking about.

(8,352 posts)Currently he is the Secretary of Housing and Urban development.
He was the first Hispanic to speak at a National Democratic convention in 2012 but other than that, nothing really all that spectacular as far as I can see.
He is a young & good looking Hispanic man that some feel would be great optics for the Clinton campaign.

My understanding he was very well liked by the citizens of San Antonio. He also has a great speaking style and looks "vice presidential"... and it certainly doesn't hurt that he is Hispanic. That demographic will appreciate him on the ticket.
TM99
(8,352 posts)Good speaking skills, looks, and being Hispanic really don't cut it for me as far as how could a VP he would be on the national level. If something happened to Clinton, and she has had at least one health scare, then how does that make him qualified to be president?
DCBob
(24,689 posts)Being a lifetime Senator from Vermont doesn't cut it for me either.

That about tells me all I need to know.

I am definitely enjoying my laugh at you buddy!

(32,118 posts)and it's not just any city. San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the country and Castro did an amazing job bringing in manufacturing jobs for the residents. If you drive there you can see all the development on the northwest side (the developers didn't exactly like him because they couldn't push him around - but they did find a way to work together).
His mother Rosie Castro was a single mom and political organizer.
Julian and his twin brother Joaquin (representative for 20th district in Texas since 2013) are both excellent but Julian has the charisma as well.
I'd rather see him as VP to Bernie, but he is a quality candidate. A little radical for the DNC but if Hillary wants a chance at getting elected she should choose him. He will be the perfect antidote to Jeb and his troubled children that he will wave in front of the camera.
TM99
(8,352 posts)I just hate though the idea of him being a potential just because of his age, looks, and ethnicity.
Personally I am hoping for Barbara Lee as Sander's VP choice.
TBF
(32,118 posts)She's awesome but do you really think Sanders/Lee is an electable ticket in this country? I really don't see it happening yet. You've seen the racist, sexist jack***** we've had to deal with. I'm not even sure Hillary/Julian can win.
For me it's incredibly frustrating, but I do think Julian is the future of the party & he's young enough that I foresee great things for him if he's patient.
TM99
(8,352 posts)He does not have anywhere near the experience she does. And if it is a matter of race, so what? Seriously, so the fuck what. We elected a black president. We can certainly elect a black vice president.
TBF
(32,118 posts)I wish.
Honestly - I would vote for them in a heartbeat. I just don't see it realistically happening
TM99
(8,352 posts)Really what is the difference when it comes to the right side of political spectrum.
Clinton and Castro would be an older woman with a young Hispanic VP.

1.409 million (2013)
San Antonio, Population
What's ***ridiculous*** is thinking that sitting in two legislative chambers representing a sparsely populated state is somehow "better" preparation for national leadership than actively managing a large, ethnically diverse and bilingual city with a wide variety of requirements. I'm not disparaging Sanders when I say this--he is a good legislator and a caring man--but he's not running for Chief Legislator of the United States--he's running for Chief Executive. And when he was a mayor, there weren't even 30K people living in Burlington VT.
Trying to turn five years of challenging, complex executive experience into some sort of "negative" is just a crummy, partisan-without-reason point to try and make. And to mock the guy for being "unknown" when Sanders was largely unknown to most Americans just a few months ago, and is STILL largely unknown to many?
That's rather ironic.

But as I say below, if it's Clinton/Castro my vote is solid as well. He is by far one of my favorites due to his amazing work in San Antonio (I live in Houston).

(8,352 posts)His net worth is around .3 million or $300,000 for the math challenged.
He is slightly above the mediam net worth of $200,000 for the 60 to 70 year old age group.
If his net worth was double that at $600,000, he would still have only been in the top 25% of his age group.
To reach the top 10%, his net worth would have to be closer to 1.5 million.
You can do the math in order to support how his actual net worth is even close to the top 1%.
Even in Vermont, Bernie is in the 1%.
TM99
(8,352 posts)before you posted it did you?
Look again. Taxable yearly income per state. Check his again.
Net worth is different than yearly taxable income and is a better determinant of percentage ranking.
DCBob
(24,689 posts)"Sanders and his wife, Jane, were likely in about the top 5 percent of American income earners last year, according to copies of their 2014 tax returns obtained by Vermont Public Radio.
The Sanders household took in more than $205,000 in 2014, and paid the feds nearly $28,000 in taxes an effective rate of about 20 percent based on Sanders' taxable income of $141,000. That means they likely earned more than 95 percent of Americans, according to the most recent data available from the U.S. Census Bureau."

When we discuss the 99% versus the 1% what is being discussed is net worth not yearly income. That can vary and does depending upon age, locale, and education.
DCBob
(24,689 posts)Why not find a candidate who is really poor?? Wouldn't that be even better?
TM99
(8,352 posts)that his net worth better be high enough to support his retirement. That just makes good fiscal sense.
The only ones assuming the purity of spirit to call for a poor martyr to run are those whose candidate is firmly in the 1% not only of yearly income and net worth but is also supported by Wall Street.

If he and Clinton end up being the ticket (I remember him meeting with her a couple of years ago & saw the photo on his Facebook page) then I will vote for them, because of Julian. He'd be a fantastic VP for anyone and I hope to see him become our first Latino President.
Peace.
