2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumNo matter who you vote for, Won't you please join Bernie's revolution?
Seriously, I think I've had an epiphany.
Bernie is building an amazing grass roots organization. Without regard to what happens in the primary we will represent a large nationwide progressive voting bloc.
Obviously I support Bernie and I think he will gain the white house, but the Bernie I've come to know would not let a little thing like losing a primary election to dismantle what is being built.
I think it actually could be as formidable as the evangelicals were in the 80's, and that we can actually change what we as a country are all about. If we allow it to fall apart, there is no hope of solving the problems we face.
No matter what happens or who you vote for, we need to use this opportunity to create the structure that will ensure the movement's survival so we can work towards our goals of a better world for our children.

(3,813 posts)Now is the time for a real progressive populist movement, but the message needs to be clear and not overly complex and it needs to be repeated over and over to drive it home into the minds of the people.
Then Bernie will win.
Been fighting for this for over 55 years now.

(131,292 posts)Martin OMalleys campaign has reached out privately to Bernie Sanders about arranging debates outside the six contests allowed by the Democratic National Committee, risking the ire of the Democratic party in a bid to gain traction for his candidacy.
Dave Hamrick, the manager of OMalleys campaign, called Sanders campaign manager, Jeff Weaver, an OMalley spokeswoman confirmed. The top managers for the two Democratic candidates discussed the DNCs authority to determine the number of debates.
The DNC has sanctioned six debates before the Iowa caucus next year, the same number as in previous election cycles, but mandated that the candidates do not participate in any outside debates.
OMalley and Sanders have both protested the limited number of debates this cycle.

(13,877 posts)I can see how it could work either way at this point. If Hillary "stays above it all" and lets them debate each other, it might be to her advantage as the "frontrunner". I can't see her, under any circumstances, go along with it.
elleng
(131,292 posts)Governor O'Malley wins (Bernie does well too,) and imo hrc loses 'frontrunner' status as the electorate recognizes the huge assets of the Governor and good stuff of the Senator whom they already 'know' pretty well, and see they easily replace her/address all of her negatives. (SORRY for such a sentence!)

(12,228 posts)sanctioned big party debates. Since the League of Women Voters left them they have ceased to be legitimate in format. They only boast power: media show, candidate control, monopoly. So when they dial back MORE legitimacy to benefit any of their power they risk losing popular support and effect.
Why not have candidates conduct more legitimate debates outside the circus? Trump has pretty much dragged the MSM media unfairness through the dirt even if it is only FOX a now totally undisguised GOP machine. There are other strong venues and critical ones.
Simply restoring the LWV and more substantive debates minus the quips, put downs sound bites and two word flags would help bury the nauseating pablum, posturing and superficiality of the enshrined party controlled rituals. Now, when there are many CRITICAL issues that can barely surface the game?
In fact, there should be outside debates. Let's do something first for a change before the GOP crazies co-opt a natural good idea.

(110,159 posts)then i can easily see sanders organizing and taking up a movement. and i think he really really likes doing crowds. he might really excel and might be like a calling for him. just playing in thought, off what you said.
interesting.
Though I'm going to caucus for Sanders, I expect Hillary to be our nominee.
It would be great if Sanders could keep his ideas in the forefront & build a movement beyond the primaries.

(7,702 posts)....President Sanders will lead and America will follow. In one way he reminds me of Reagan, in that the young people love him the way they might love their grandad. A sure sign of of electoral success, and much earlier than Reagan as evidenced by his HUGE crowds this summer!

(885 posts)He's drawing in Republicans to a progressive cause like Reagan drew in Democrats to a conservative cause. And Bernie is doing it by advocating to return the US to the way it was before trickle down economics introduced by Reagan.
This country is finally starting to wake up and realize they've been duped for the past 3+ decades.

(16,184 posts)about the dominance of white progressives in the progressive movement and the lack of attention given to AA issues by calling the protestors--and some AA Hillary supporters--brain damaged, immature fascist brownshirts, throwing the entirety of the BLM movement under the bus, and just to really drive the message home, whining about "apologizing for being white."
Whereas the person they claim to support responded by immediately adding a new plank to their platform and hiring an AA press secretary to address the community's needs.
Beartracks
(12,827 posts)I'll point out that there are also certain DUers who claim that the "immediate" addition of an AA plank in Sanders' platform was "too slow" and proves that he's still not responsive to AA issues.
Personally, I'd like all the pot-shots, trolling, and in-fighting at DU to stop, for people to put away their wounded pride and chipped shoulders, and start remembering why we're involved here at all -- we've got a country to save.

(8,175 posts)that doesn't turn into a battle between Hillary and Bernie supporters? PLEASE!
One thing for sure I've seen is how easy it is to divide this country into splinters that cannot stand together to do any damn thing. Doesn't take any effort at all.
How about people read the message of this OP instead of dragging around their gunnysacks of hate and anger?
hootinholler
(26,449 posts)Relative to other responses I've gotten from camp weathervane.
I'm not aware of any Hillary supporters who have rec'd this notion.
passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)But there was absolutely nothing in your OP to bring out the negative posts. And of course it had to happen anyway. Because hate and winning just seems to be more important that working together, for so many people.
BTW, I hope Bernie is sitting in the oval office in 2017, but if not, I'm totally with you on this. It doesn't matter who wins in the long run (I mean it matters, but it won't be an end of the world event if our guy doesn't win)...what matters is that the people become involved and keep this movement going. Even if the GOP were to win. We do have a voice...a very powerful voice, when we decide to use it.
