The server was either temporarily offline for maintenance or overcapacity. Issues like that are usually just temporary, as was this one.

at 7 am, when there was no such problem, given all the news, all week?

I wonder if the DU server(s) capacity are being tested for a future Denial-of-Service attack. We are coming up on an important election, we would be wise to expect rightwingers to attempt to disrupt our communications.
