Bernie Sanders

Trade, wages and the corrupt political class are the new key issues. Bernie and Trump finished off the party elites.
BILL CURRY
You wouldnt know it from watching TV last night or reading the national papers this morning but Bernie Sanders Michigan win ranks among the greatest upsets in presidential primary history.
1. The old politics is over. The fault lines of the new politics are not cultural issues like guns, abortion and same-sex marriage that divide the Democratic and Republican bases. They are issues of political reform and economic justice that divide both partys elites from both parties bases, and the American people from their government. On these issues we find the elites of both parties shockingly alike. Among them: global trade; financial deregulation and prosecution of financial crimes; the social safety net including Social Security, Medicare, a living wage and health care for all; above all, the soft corruption of pay to play politics.
I often talk to Democrats who dont know Obama chose not to raise the minimum wage as president even though he had the votes for it.
2. 2. Hillary Clinton has neither their deft personal touch nor protean verbal skills. When she tries to distract the base or paper over its differences with elites, voters see through her, even if, in their hearts, they dont want to. In Michigan she tried to smear Sanders as a foe of the auto bailout. Before that she sent Chelsea and Bill out to say Bernie would kill Medicare. Each time she ended up only hurting herself. She has tried to co-opt Sanders positions on global trade, climate change, military adventurism, a living wage and universal health care.
Its always too little, too late. Voters sense shes just moving pawns on a chess board in part because she can never explain her change of heart and often doesnt even try.
3. The performance of the press has been abysmal. Watching CNN and MSNBC last night was painful, as was reading the Washington Post or the New York Times this morning. The TV coverage was of a piece with all other 2016 election coverage. Last night FOX, CNN and MSNBC kept cameras glued on Trump for 40 minutes as he delivered a bizarre, rambling rant in which he talked about himself, his opponents and some steaks he was either selling or giving away.
As Bernie made history,..... An MSNBC panel consisting of Brian Williams, Rachel Maddow, Gene Robinson, Lawrence ODonnell and Chuck Todd dove right into a discussion of who Hillary might choose as her running mate
When revolutions in the air polls, money and ads mean far less. Reporters who know nothing else cant conceive how voters choosing among a democratic socialist, a pay-to-play politician and a fascist might pick door number one. They bought Hillarys myth of inevitability, but as Lawrence of Arabia told Prince Ali in the desert, nothing is written. If Democratic voters really use their heads, theyll see through the tactical arguments just like the voters of Michigan did and then walk into voting booths all over America and vote their hearts. Then there will be change.
Thank dog people are finally waking up!

(31,935 posts)Voters want political reform and economic justice. They know that without reform theyll never get justice. Bernie Sanders is the only candidate who shares that opinion. The election is part of a broader revolt against a failed status quo. Clinton is an architect of that status quo; Trump, a big beneficiary. So she hides her transcripts and he hides his tax returns. Bernie is an open book. Its why he has the highest favorability rating of any candidate in the race and Clinton has the lowest of any presidential candidate in the history of polling, except for Trump.

(3,457 posts)It's about the 99 percent finally waking up to the fact that the elite have screwed us over for the past thirty years and people are finally fed up. Unfortunately, the authoritarian personalities love Trump and if they follow their hearts will be lead into a dictatorship that will look like something out of Argentina under the Perons. Trump is a one percenter who is centered on only himself and increasing his power.

(33 posts)Yes, Rachel has sold out, maybe that's why her smiles look so painful. I actually emailed her about the religious plant at the end of the last debate, about how those questions, and Cooper's follow-up were despicable beyond words. Not a word back. I challenged her to discuss it on her show...NOTHING!!

(8,175 posts)Soft corruption or whatever Kennedy wants to call it, is endemic to the establishment and why it will continue to run and ruin this economy for the majority of people, and block progressive change.
Obama got sucked into it quickly once in office. I hope he really wasn't like that before, but he has backed or given in on entirely too many policies that are wrong, and that's the only reason I can see him doing so. I love the man dearly and know in his heart he's a good man, but in many things he's been wrong. Perhaps for him it's denial too.

(8,175 posts)With her Super PAC (and hers and Bills breathtaking haul of $153 million in mostly corporate speaking fees), she is the living avatar of pay to play politics. She shouldnt be the Democratic nominee for president because she doesnt even know its wrong.
And neither do her supporters.

(5,995 posts)He was asked what disappointed him most about our current President. He recalled an interview with then Senator Obama during the 2008 primary. He asked about immigration reform being a priority in a new administration. He said Obama wouldn't promise to address it in the first 100 days, but would certainly do it in the 1st year. That never happened when having a Dem House and 60+ Senators would have assured him being able to ram it through if he had chosen to.
I am extremely proud of our President, but he's as human as any of us and we all make mistakes. No candidate or President will be perfect for all people, but I'd prefer to vote for the one that aims high for the least of us.

(57,936 posts)I often talk to Democrats who dont know Obama chose not to raise the minimum wage as president even though he had the votes for it; that he was willing to cut Medicare and Social Security and chose not to prosecute Wall Street crimes or pursue ethics reforms in government. They dont know he dropped the public option or the aid he promised homeowners victimized by mortgage lenders. They dont know and dont want to know. Their affection for Bill and Barack and their fear of Republicans run too deep.

(5,614 posts)Newman (the guy in the tux) made a couple of albums and covered a lot of really great songs (including Both Sides Now, for example) but this was perhaps his best. I first heard it in a movie called Magic Christian which featured Ringo Starr as well as others.
Don't know what happened to them afterwards (the little guy was listed as Speedy Keen and was, I think, fifteen at the time of this video) but the memory stays long after the performers are gone.
Thank heavens for video.

Bernie won Michigan by 1.5%
If more people vote for him then the revolution will happen.
Only smart people voted for Bernie.
So what's new here? what's the newsworthy part? Isn't that what the Sanders camp says after every primary?
Just asking....

I guess it's called "selfishness".
I've got mine, but too bad for you if you can't find a good job or are poor.
Bernie's message should be resonating with more voters who have had enough. In other words, it's taken a lot of time to get out there.

(8,333 posts)Thanks for posting. Very interesting article, tho' I thought he could have toned down on the snark in some sections about Hillary. He clearly does not like her. But his analysis was refreshing.
My nagging concern is that not enough people are going to see through the tactics.
