Source: KZRG News
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the second wave of approximately $1 billion in funding from President Bidens Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to start new cleanup projects at 22 Superfund sites, including the Valley Park TCE Site in Valley Park, Missouri, and to expedite over 100 other ongoing cleanups across the country.
Thousands of contaminated sites exist nationally due to hazardous waste being dumped, left out in the open, or otherwise improperly managed, including in manufacturing facilities, processing plants, landfills, and mining sites. Superfund cleanups help transform contaminated properties and create jobs in overburdened communities, while repurposing these sites for a wide range of uses, including public parks, retail businesses, office space, residences, warehouses, and solar power generation. In addition, these sites can support natural areas, parks, and recreation facilities, providing greenspace and safe places for families to play outside.

Native Americans double down on protests against Kansas City mascot ahead of Super Bowl
Source: The Hill
A Native American activist group is doubling down on its protests against the Kansas City Chiefs controversial mascot as the team heads to the Super Bowl on Sunday.
Not In Our Honor, a Kansas City-based group that advocates against the use of Native American imagery in sports, hosted several events leading up to the Super Bowl in Arizona and plans to protest at the game itself.
Founder Rhonda LeValdo told The Hill that the goal of the efforts is to make people aware of how this imagery and cultural appropriation works against us and how it affects us as Native people.
This is a worldwide event, LeValdo added. I dont want people in different countries thinking this is OK to do to us.

UN human rights experts accuse U.S. law enforcement of violating international law
Source: Law & Crime
United Nations human rights experts on Friday accused U.S. law enforcement of violating international laws and obligations prohibiting torture or other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment in response to the recent in-custody deaths of two Black men following interactions with police in California and Tennessee.
Yvonne Mokgoro, the chairperson of the UN International Independent Expert Mechanism to Advance Racial Justice and Equality in the context of Law Enforcement, urged action.
The brutal deaths of Keenan Anderson and Tyre Nichols are more reminders of the urgency to act, she said in a news release.

Trump attorney appeared before federal grand jury in Mar-a-Lago probe
Source: CNN
Donald Trump attorney Evan Corcoran appeared last month to testify before a federal grand jury in Washington, DC, thats looking at the former presidents handling of national security records at his Mar-a-Lago residence, a source confirmed to CNN.
Prosecutors asked Corcoran about what had occurred up until the August 8, 2022, search of Mar-a-Lago, which came after investigators found evidence that made them believe classified records kept at the Florida resort were moved and concealed including questions about his interactions with Trump, another person familiar with the situation said.
The disclosure of Corcorans testimony comes amid a steady drip of recent moves by special counsel Jack Smith to obtain grand jury testimony from very close contacts of Trump, in many cases about what Trump was told and what he said at the end of his presidency and afterward.
Corcoran declined to answer some questions in the grand jury that would have divulged his advice to Trump and their conversations, citing attorney-client privilege, the person familiar added. The Justice Department has repeatedly tried in the investigation to force witnesses to answer questions they declined to respond to in the grand jury, but the courts will ultimately have to decide if Corcoran must say more.

WHILE CLAIMING JEWISH HERITAGE, ANNA PAULINA LUNA FORGOT TO MENTION HER NAZI GRANDFATHER
Source: Vanity Fair and Washington Post
Is Anna Paulina Luna the new George Santos?
Since it first came out last December that newly elected lawmaker George Santos had lied about roughly 99% of his biography, fresh falsehoods and cons involving the New York congressman have emerged on a near-daily, sometimes hourly basis. Given the pace with which these revelations have unfolded, and the sheer volume of lies, it seems unlikely at this time that any of Santoss Republican colleagues will be able to outdo him when it comes to apparently never telling the truth about anything. But at least one is trying!
We speak, of course, of Representative Anna Paulina Luna, who was the subject of a Washington Post exposé that suggested the 33-year-old Florida lawmaker has played it fast and loose with the facts concerning her background. For instance, claiming to both have Jewish heritage and to have been raised as a Jew, despite people familiar with the matter saying that was not the case.

Former acting Defense chief under Trump calls for military budget to be cut in half
Source: The Hill
Former acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller is making the case for the Pentagons budget to be cut in half in his new memoir, Soldier Secretary, arguing the U.S. military should be molded into a leaner and nimbler fighting force with prioritized areas of focus.
At the end of his memoir, Miller writes the U.S. must adapt to the threats posed by foreign adversaries like Russia and China by reforming the military, which he calls too big and bloated and wasteful.
Our colossal military establishment was essential for our Cold War victory, but the Cold War has been over for 30 years, Miller writes. If we are truly going to end American adventurism and retool our military to face the challenges of the next century, we should cut military spending by 40-50 percent.
We could cut our defense budget in half and it would still be twice as big as Chinas, Miller writes in his memoir.

In Autopsy Study, Over 90% of Former NFL Players Showed Signs of Brain Disease CTE
From: U.S. News & World report
"Researchers at the Boston University CTE Center recently announced that they have now diagnosed CTE in the brains of 345 of 376 (91.7%) of NFL players studied.
The NFL player data doesn't necessarily mean that 9 of 10 current and former NFL players have CTE. Exactly how many do is unknown since the condition can only be definitively diagnosed by brain autopsy after death.
Every 2.6 years of football at any level doubles your risk for CTE, and the longer you play and the higher level that you play, the greater your risk, said Dr. Ann McKee, director of the Boston University (BU) CTE Center and chief of neuropathology at VA Boston Healthcare System. She also directs the UNITE brain bank, the world's largest tissue repository focused on CTE and traumatic brain injury.
The new research builds on findings from a 2017 study that showed CTE in 99% of the brains of NFL players, 91% of college football players, and 21% of high school football players in the UNITE brain bank."

Trump finally offers to hand over DNA to E Jean Carroll rape case - after deadline passes to submit
Source: AOL News
Donald Trump has finally offered to hand over his DNA in his upcoming rape trial with E Jean Carroll but only after the deadline passed to submit evidence in the case.
Attorneys for the former president said last week that he had finally agreed to take a DNA test so that his sample can be compared to a dress Ms Carroll says she was wearing at the time of the alleged sexual assault, reported The Daily Beast.
Ms Carroll, who was a TV talk show host at the time, claims that Mr Trump raped her in a dressing room in high-end Manhattan department store Bergdorf Goodman in 1996.
Ms Carroll kept the Donna Karan black coat dress she said she was wearing at the time and the now-infamous item lies at the centre of her case against the one-term president.

Walmart to close some 'underperforming' stores in 3 states
Source: The Hill
Nearly half a dozen Walmart locations are set to close in the coming weeks, just two months after the retail chains CEO warned stores could close amid an uptick in shoplifting.
A Walmart in southeast Albuquerque, New Mexico, is set to close within a month, a company spokesperson confirmed to Nexstars KRQE. The company described the store as underperforming but noted that several factors contribute to the decision to close a location.
Walmart is also preparing to close a store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, according to local reporting, and three stores in the Chicago area. Nexstars WGN reports two of the stores in Chicago did not meet financial expectations.
In December, CEO Doug McMillon warned Walmart could close stores and raise prices due to historically high rates of theft at stores.

Expect Damar Hamlin to play football again, NFL players union doctor says
Source: NBC News
Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, whose on-the-field collapse sent shockwaves throughout the sport, will play professional football again, a physician close to the player said Wednesday.
Dr. Thom Mayer, medical director for the NFL Players Association, told SiriusXMs show Heart to Heart that he has no doubts Hamlin will lace up his cleats and be back on the gridiron.
I dont want to get into HIPAA issues, but I guarantee you, I guarantee you ... that Damar Hamlin will play professional football again, Mayer told the show.
A representative for Hamlin could not be immediately reached for comment Wednesday, and Hamlin has not publicly addressed a return to the field since he went into cardiac arrest and was resuscitated on the field last month.
