23. Yes, it is quite possible the trial won't be finished before the election

We can imagine all sorts of “what if?” And “what happens?” Scenarios, including riots and nightmares, but it all seems to come down to the presumption that convicting Trump before the election is required in order to protect and preserve democracy.

While I can see the political strategic benefits to convicting Trump before election day, I vehemently reject the notion it is required to save democracy, and it certainly isnt required to defeat him in November.

I am not worried about “riots and nightmares” that you have described could follow election day if Trump is not convicted beforehand. During the interregnum between election day and inauguration day, Biden will still be president, the national guard has plenty of guns and ammunition to put down any uprising. I think it is unlikely another J6 would happen at the Capitol, and any violence at local polling places will likely be limited and able to be handled by local law enforcement- the bigger risk is shenanigans by state legislatures and local election boards, and that risk is not affected by the timing of Trump’s conviction.

I want to see Trump behind bars as much as anyone else, but we shouldn’t let the ups and downs of the Justice system distract us from what should be the top priority- Joe Biden’s reelection.

Excellent article. The last two lines are certainly sobering. Lonestarblue Apr 6 #1
