(11,764 posts)History is littered with "terrible" people, much more evil and terrible than Greene. The fact that they can rise to positions of power and stay so long in those positions, is more a statement on us as a society than on the fact that "terrible" people exist. Why is Donald Trump the presumptive nominee of one of the two major political parties in the United States? He is terrible. The man that Greene is defending, Vladimir Putin, has been in power in Russia for over 20 years. He is terrible. The US House of Representatives, is full of terrible people, all of whom have won elections to be in that position.
We need to stop asking "How can people be so terrible?" and start really focusing on "Why do we put terrible people in positions of power?" What kind of systems are in place, that allow people with no morals or ethics to become powerful?
Then we need to challenge those systems and power structures.
