Inoculation for smallpox wa%developed in China in the 16th century and adopted by the Turks by the late 17th. Smallpox carries 30% death rate. Inoculation carried about a 3% death rate.

Some of the early vaccines worked better and some didn't. Here is a timeline, but alas, no notes on which ones worked:
