28. I marched back then

May 2

I recall walking on an overpass and the guy next to me, who appeared developmentally disabled, threw rocks at the busses that carried the cops. That caused them to empty out of the busses and gas us.

I marched against the war and Kent State. Sometimes I marched with my boyfriend who had come back from Viet Nam and joined veterans against the war.
My brother-in-law did two tours and my cousin did two tours over there. I prayed for their safe return and I prayed my brother would not be drafted because I knew he would never make it out alive.
My classmates were being drafted to go to war.
Parents were terrified their sons would be drafted.

There was an absolute passion to have the war stopped. It was not a war on our soil but our young men were sent to fight a war we did not want. There was destruction of property throughout the demonstrations against the war but they continued on.
I do not think the demonstrations now are anything comparable to the Viet Nam protests.

A fair observation, I think. SYFROYH May 1 #1
