I wonder and have for a while if the explosion of opioid availability and subsequent abuse isn't also what brought some magats out from under their rocks. I am not a medical professional but a quick search turns up the following.

Chronic opioid abuse can lead to issues like:

poor response to stress
antisocial personality disorder
depression
problems with decision-making and behavior
behavior regulation
altered pain perception
chronic discontent

Hmmm who does this sound like?

I know that some chronic pain sufferers need these meds and in my mind are accepted from this.
