Bush call halted US voting for ceasefire
Source: Independent

Condoleezza Rice, the US Secretary of State, was forced to step back from voting in favour of the Gaza ceasefire resolution at the UN Security Council after orders from Washington, diplomatic sources said yesterday.

The US abstention on the resolution vote early yesterday, which clearly weakened its impact, was the final twist in a tumultuous three-day marathon of negotiations in New York.

When three of the world's top diplomats -- Ms Rice, David Miliband, Britain's foreign secretary, and his French counterpart, Bernard Kouchner -- descended on New York on Tuesday to take action there was plenty of reason to believe that their efforts would end in tears. Most alarming was the prospect of a vote on a ceasefire text tabled by Libya. The US was threatening to veto it.

But by Thursday morning, the US had had a surprising change of heart. It could back a resolution, if the British drafted one, which Mr Miliband and his diplomatic crew duly did.

32. If he does nuke Iran w/in the next 20 days, he will never be held accountable
by the complicit Dems....Pelosi, Reid, and it looks like Obama & team.

The double standard of justice in this country has been made perfectly clear by the entire legislative branch of the government. They could not send a more clear message to the people of this country than letting this administration have a free pass, and by giving trillions to the thieves at the highest levels of industry.

THAT is why people in Oakland were marching....we're ALL fucking sick and tired of the double standard of justice.

12. This PROVES the U.S. and Israel are ONE. Israel is doing the killing with
weapons we manufactured, so we are 50-50 responsible for the attempted extinction of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. This is a massacre by the U.S. and Israel, probably with the approval of the UK and France.

The next 9 days are the scariest in our history.

This might be preparation for the invastion of Iran.

Or a declaration of martial law with a cancellation of the transfer of power.

How do we take this Cheney (military industrial media reverend baron) abstention to mean less?

British Gas, Israel to freeze Hamas out of $4b. gas deal

Israel and the British natural gas company BG Group Plc will move ahead with controversial plans to drill for natural gas in the Gaza Marine field, despite Hamas's takeover of the Gaza Strip last month, The Jerusalem Post learned on Thursday.

The two sides have arrived at an "understanding" that will transfer funds intended for the Palestinian Authority's Palestinian Investment Fund into an international bank account, a BG source told The Post.

"Both Israel and BG intend that until the PA is able to remove Hamas from power in the Gaza Strip, the money will be held in an international bank account," the source said. "Neither side wants the money to go to fund terror-related activities."

According to the plan, BG will drill for natural gas 36 kilometers off of the Gaza coast, in an area that was designated as PA territory following the Oslo Accords. The gas will then flow four km underwater in a pipeline 850 meters below the surface to an Ashkelon refinery. The field, which BG purchased in 2000 and to which Hamas now claims rightful ownership, contains 1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas worth an estimated $4 billion, with Israel set to become the sole consumer of the resources.

19. Another war on terror?
I wonder how many people will read this and ask if this is just another war on terror that is really another war for oil.

"Both Israel and BG intend that until the PA is able to remove Hamas from power in the Gaza Strip, the money will be held in an international bank account..."

It doesn't matter to anyone that the Palestinian people voted for Hama in democratic elections?

22. It's not just oil or gas. It's water. One million plus refugees living in tight
Edited on Sat Jan-10-09 10:33 AM by higher class
conditions - that's a lot of water for Israel if the refugees are eliminated.

Israel must have had a change of mind about two states - and the U.S. didn't have to agree because, as far as the leaders are concerned, Israel and the U.S. are one.

It makes you wonder when this decision was made to take the Strip?

Is this to compensate for not doing the same to Iran or is the lead up to doing it to Iran - the ignition light.

31. That's the next war on terror...
The next war on terror will be the war for water. Although this really is about the oil and the gas. Although as you point out, if they can run the Palestinians into Sinai there will be more water. And that of course is the only place the Palestinians in Gaza have to go.

Maybe the Israelis, and the Boy from Brazil, believe that Egypt will just give up and give the Palestinians Sinai for Palestine. That is not going to happen. How many days are left before the Boy from Brazil leaves the White House? Truly scary to think what he might do in the remaining time. The world is scary enough just as it is because of him.

Edited on Sat Jan-10-09 01:11 PM by Phred42
You're locked in a room with a rabid dog and the only person with the key to the door won't use it - or - let anyone else use it.
IF someone gets bit, is it the Rabid Dogs fault?

An impeachment might have prevent or at least slowed the perversions of the past couple of months committed by republicans and especially shit-for-brains.

I blame Pelosi and Reid for all of this. They are either partners or cowards
