At Easter service, Pastor lays out liberal morals |
|
At the Easter service I attended at a Lutheran church, the Pastor said that there are 2 places (other than Easter) that people celebrate Jesus' resurection, funerals and baptisms, the then went on to say that Easter isn't just about death and it isn't just about birth, that it is about living the life that Jesus led every moment in between birth and death. He then gave examples of feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, helping the sick, loving your enemy, giving people a second chance, and being a people for peace not war and on and on.
It was great. I bet that I might have been one of 5 (if that many) that conected this message to liberal politics. This message needs to get out more to show the hypocrisy of the Christian right.

1. That's the kind of church that leaves people hopeful and |
|
energetic. You're lucky to have found it.
I would hope that other mainstream churches are starting to return to the message of tolerance and charity. I keep hoping that the current public infatuation with religious bigotry and hatred has about run its course, especially with the present circus making them think about things for the first time in years.
It's time for more mainstream religions to stop dropping the ball on this stuff. The message is a valid one. It's time to stop pussyfooting around it, trying not to offend GOP parishoners.

2. Awhile ago on Bill Moyer's NOW there was a nun on. I wish I could |
|
remember her name. She felt that Catholicism and Christianity is or should be based on the Beatitudes. I have always creditrd my Catholic upbringing for my liberalism (the churches I attended tended to rather liberal).
The text of St. Matthew runs as follows:
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 3) Blessed are the meek: for they shall posses the land. (Verse 4) Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted. (Verse 5) Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill. (Verse 6) Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (Verse 7) Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God. (Verse 8) Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. (Verse 9) Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 10)

3. Same here - I have never understood the fundie position of sticking |
|
the 10 Commandments up everywhere. Shouldn't Christians want to cite the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount as our rules for life? Jesus got rid of all but two of the 10 Commandments - love God and love your neighbor.

7. her name was Joan Chiltister, OSB |
|
I hope I have the spelling right. Or else it was Chittister. I wrote it down but can't read my own writing.
She had some excellent things to say on NOW. Like that the religious right is not a religion. That it is a tool of oppression. They are extremists. Dogmatism is the enemy--that there is only one truth.
