Are nerds always the better people? |
|
Two guys approach the Gates of Heaven. Saint Peter demands they confess their sins...
"My name is Ex-Jock. I made a few kids miserable in High School. I knocked my kid around..."
"My name is Nerdlinger. I worked for _______. I worked out the kinks in our cluster bombs."
Who's really screwed here?

1. Nerds are entirely capable of being jerks |
|
but since they have so much experience being ignored or treated like crap, they're uncomfortable turning around and doing it to other people directly.

2. Some grow up to be petty assholes for that reason too |
|
More so with nerd dudes than nerd women.

5. That's because nerd women are usually revered and put on pedestals by nerd guys. :P |
|
And unfortunately for those poor nerd guys that won't get them laid.
I was fortunate enough to be more than just a nerd, most namely also a musician. So that not only meant that I was around girls all the time and was used to talking to them without making a fool of myself, but also I had something that I could do that most girls found interesting. So out of my geek friends in high school I was pretty much the only one that ever kissed a girl by the time we graduated. :)
Which is kind of ironic because I'm fairly certain I was the only one there who wasn't interested solely in girls... :P

Nerd boys are generally too busy chasing after cheerleader/supermodel types to give nerd girls the time of day. When we're noticed, we're generally treated like "one of the guys".
Yeah, I'm not bitter at all. :P

10. There are a good portion like that |
|
my last roommate was one. :P Needless to say, until he finally started to get a clue and look for a girl with boobs AND brains, he had his left hand, while I dated a girl with a double D cup and no gag reflex. And then when I broke up with her I ended up 'dating' a hot nurse for a while. :P (It was basically more of a friends with benefits thing than actual dating, but it's more than he had. And that also meant that I got to defile his nice new couch before he did.)

9. As a nerd, I've found that the best pick-up line is definitely: "Do you like Star Trek?" |
|
And then you have to make a huge noise sucking the saliva out of your retainer.

15. Well, I did date a girl who liked biting and pulling hair and stuff... |
|
so that's pretty much like dating a klingon. Only without the facial ridges.

Hi, newbie here. I like this board better than the politics boards...they're so intense. I'm scared to post over there.
Regarding nerds, my opinion is that they are generally a better group of people. However, if you break the tribe down into subgroups then it's a different story. I live and work in the SF/ Silicon Valley area of California, a.k.a. nerd central due to the high tech and biotech industries, not to mention Stanford University and UC Berkeley. I went to UCB, and IMO academic nerds are the nicest and most unassuming subgroup. Then there are the high tech nerds, specifically the guys, who are very much defined not only by their supposed intellectual superiority, but also by status and consumerist fervor.
I've dated geeks who work for Google, Yahoo and Genentech among others, I'd say a lot of them are very status-conscious. I can't count how many times dates or boyfriends bragged to me about things like customized cars, gourmet kitchen, expensive watches, and the latest high tech gadgets. I recently left a lunch date early because of the nerd complaining about the measly $100 rebate given by Apple to diehard nerds like himself, who braved the resentment and ridicule of the masses by procuring the initial iPhones. Boo hoo, I'm supposed to feel sorry for someone who could afford to spend $600 on a non-essential gadget like the iPhone. I bet the busboy clearing our table really felt my date's pain---not.
Women nerds are great on the whole, I wish I was more nerdy so as to be counted as one.

12. That last guy you were talking about |
|
sounds like someone who's either been pampered all his life and just doesn't realize how the 'other half' lives... or someone who is so insecure as to need 'status' to feel better about himself. Possibly both. :P

13. Welcome to DU and don't be afraid to post "out there" |
|
I didn't even know the lounge existed when I first started here. Just find a thread you agree with, say something like , "I agree" and go from there.
One other thing, don't take anything personally out there.

8. Nerds and Jocks have Equal Capacity to be Assholes |
|
The difference is that when jocks are assholes it gets them laid. When nerds are assholes, it catches them a beat down.
