NYPD EXAGGERATES [GOP] CONVENTION UNREST (& video) |
|
http://www.americanprogressaction.org/site/pp.asp?c=klLWJcP7H&b=504741CIVIL LIBERTIES – NYPD EXAGGERATES CONVENTION UNREST: During the Republican National Convention last summer, nearly two thousand people were arrested in the midst of exercising their first amendment right to assembly and the democratic ideal of political protest. According to the account of arresting police officer Matthew Wohl, protester Dennis Kyne fought back so vehemently that "it took four police officers to haul him down the steps of the New York Public Library and across Fifth Avenue" while he squirmed, screamed, and kicked. The problem with this tale, and more and more like it, is that "a sprawling body of visual evidence, made possible by inexpensive, lightweight cameras in the hands of private citizens, volunteer observers and the police themselves, has shifted the debate over precisely what happened on the streets during the week of the convention." Charges against hundreds of allegedly riot-inciting, arrest-resisting protesters have been dropped as "video recordings provided evidence that they had not committed a crime or that the charges against them could not be proved." In the specific case of Kyne and Wohl, a documentary filmmaker caught shots of Kyne "plainly walking under his own power down the library steps" while Wohl was not only "nowhere to be seen in the pictures" but neither was he "taking part in the arrests of four other people at the library against whom he signed complaints."
