What a great election! We won!
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 04:19 PM by ocelot
*All* of us won. Maybe some of you frothing, rabid Clinton/Obama partisans think only your candidate won, and you're now spinning the results hard enough to pull Gs. But the fact is that effectively there was a tie, and that's a really *good* thing. Here's why:

First, it means a lot more people will get to cast votes that count. If as many people as possible can participate in choosing the nominee in a meaningful way, the the final choice will be seen as valid and acceptable to more people, and that will encourage them to support the nominee actively -- not just vote.

Second, the candidates will have to further refine themselves and define their positions, as well as better prepare themselves for the general election. This will make the nominee a better, more effective candidate.

Finally, and most importantly, the Republicans won't know who they are running against for awhile yet -- maybe not even until the convention. This means they can't put a final election strategy together, and they'll have to engage in race-baiting and gender-stereotyping *simultaneously*. They've been counting on running against Hillary, and they're just waiting to trot out the old slanders -- you know; she's a radical Stalinist who will take away your guns and send your children to collective farms where they will become gay and learn witchcraft. Now they have to come up with an equally insane narrative against Obama, and they'll have to defame both candidates at the same time, making them lose the focus they'd counted on.

But we already know the GOPers will almost certainly nominate McCain, meaning both Obama and Clinton can lay off each other a little and start taking shots at him. Their primary task has now become convincing Democrats that they are better able to defeat McCain, and now the Dems can focus on that goal. If Clinton and Obama (and their campaigns) can resist the temptation to keep bashing each other over trivial crap like handshakes and aim their guns at McCain, either of them has an excellent chance of winning in November.

McCain looks old and lumpy, and his flat, uninspiring campaign speeches seem to consist mostly of lame and occasionally offensive jokes. He comes across like a has-been standup comic playing a failing dinner theatre in suburban Des Moines. Next to him, both Obama and Clinton will seem overwhelmingly young and vital and smart. What a contrast that will be!

And last night also proves once and for all that people *will* come out in huge numbers to vote for a woman and an African-American, so we can put to rest the notion that only old white guys can be viable candidates. We rock. We should be proud.

12. I'm sure they've thought of it. If I could do a YouTube thing I'd concoct an ad myself.
McCain is SO easy to lampoon.

They almost remember to stick in something about the Repukes. When have you ever seen the MSM act like that? It is truly astounding!!!

19. Only the Dems can mess this up
Should be a resounding win for the Dems in Congress and the Presidential race.

As long as they don't make the mistake of nominating Hillary

20. Stop it. That's exactly the kind of thinking we should NOT be engaging in right now.

Maybe she will be the nominee, maybe not. No matter who is nominated, if everybody acts like adults and votes strategically instead of pouting about how THEIR candidate was unfairly screwed by the MSM, the party, God, the Trilateral Commission or the Freemasons or all the mean people on DU or whoever, the nominee WILL win. McCain is vulnerable and the GOP is fragmented. If we're not stupid and partisan and short-sighted, we can take them. We all won, so don't crap on my thread.

22. Totally disagree..........
Hillary vs. McCain presents some enormous problems for us. I'm firmly behind Obama, and the primary reason he has my support is because he so clearly gives us the best chance to win in the GE. I will absolutely, positively vote for Hillary if she wins the nomination, but I'll be here the night of the GE venting.

23. This thread is about celebrating the excellent consequences of yesterday's election.
If you want to do yet another "OMG, if ________ is nominated we're DOOMED!" post, there are lots of other threads for that.

I'm enjoying what is clearly a victory.
