I support Roland Burris being seated BUT I'LL MOST LIKELY support one of his Democratic challengers |
|
In 2010, hell I probably will know which challenger I will be supporting later this year when they all announce.
Folks worrying about losing this seat in 2010, should know that between the craftiness of Illinois Democrats and the ineptness of the Illinois GOP we stand a very good chance of holding on to this seat. It will take some work, but we can do it.

1. Yeah, I'm changing my mind on this too. |

I still think Burris is a monumental douche, but at the same time, I think this is not a fight worth having, and I want all 59 members of the Democratic Senate caucus in their seats and legislating - we need all hands to break Mitch McConnell's back and make it possible to do something useful in the Senate.
But yeah. I'd say that the best compromise would be to say Burris can be seated if he agrees to step aside in 2010 and let someone else run as the Democratic candidate for that seat. Seat him, dump him in the back bench, throw him in the most useless committee we can find, and tell him not to touch anything.

So who does one support?
Lisa Madigan? Nope. I'm dynastied out.
Tod Stroger? Just kidding.
JJJ? Maybe. Lets see how the Blago thing turns out.
Emil Jones? Too old, and he is a crook.
Danny Davis? I think that he has not accomplished much. I love to listen to him talk, but I don't think he would get much done for the state.
Dan Hynes? Maybe. But he is Jeremiah Joyce's tool and as we know Jeremiah Joyce (and his son Pickle - ugh!) also is a crook.
We have to have somebody. I can't decide who.

4. Tammy Duckworth could run for that Senate Seat. |
|
She's good. Too bad I don't live in Illinois, or I'd vote for her.

7. She could use a speech coach, but she's done a lot of good things. |
|
I'd like to see her in more leadership roles - she's been good as director of the Illinois Dept. of Veterans Affairs. Then again, I'd like to give people with potential more than one chance as far as running for elected office goes - maybe she learned something from her last race, could figure out a few ways to improve her campaigning and try again.

8. You could say the same about Obama, don't forget how Rush destroyed him 2000 |
|
I'm not sure who I will support but Tammy is an option.

9. Barack had to go to the state senate to learn things |
|
I think Duckworth has to learn things. Way too green.

10. Barack was already in the state senate, and as director of Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs |
|
Tammy is learning a lot. Re: healthcare, jobs, education, etc. Basically all aspects of life for Illinois veterans.

6. Isn't Burris kind of old anyway? Isn't he pretty much just a placeholder? |

11. Yep. Sums up my attitude too. |

I've not been huge Burris fan for a while now--mainly because I have been less than impressed with his downstate campaigns. (If you make it to state level offices you should at least be able to run a credible campaign and appear at events in a positive way.) I have also been less than impressed with how Burris has publicly conducted himself in this recent mess. I will most likely support someone else in a Primary.
Having said all that, there is no reason why Burris should not be seated at this time. Much as I am disgusted by Blago, he IS still the Governor and has the responsibility of making that appointment according to Illinois law. The legislature has not removed Blago from office nor have they enacted legislation calling for a special election. As such, Burris IS the legal Senator for Illinois along with Dick Durbin. He needs to be seated.
While we've all been pissing and moaning about this little drama, our country is still in a serious economic situation and the Middle East is a mess. Maybe it is time to get back to work.
