Hi, everyone. I am moving to Eagan this summer with a friend of mine who already lives there. This is a big deal for me because I am coming from a small PA town that has no future economically. My friend feels very confident that I will find a good job and will be able to finish my degree in MN...so I guess I'm just looking for some words of encouragement here! :)
I am packing up and leaving my family and everything I have ever known but I figure that I'm 33 and I need to make a decision to either stay here or go somewhere else...staying here would mean never having more than a job when I want a career. And having my dear friend there makes it a good option for me as I will not be all alone. But I can't help but be nervous about it.

1. Things are pretty good |

so far. I'm in St. Paul (close to Eagan). You should visit St. Paul--it's a very cool town and extremely Democratic (except for our RAT mayor Randy Kelly who is a DINO).
We kept MN blue for you! (But the repukes are trying hard to turn it--so come on and help us out! We need to get rid of Gov. Pawlenty and SOS Mary Kiffmeyer and re-elect our good Dem Senator Mark Dayton in 2006.)
That is, of course, unless the fascist empire ruins everything and there really is no more democracy...and no real elections ever again

My neighbor was happy to hear that if I had to move away, at least I was going to another blue state!
I've been checking out Eagan's web site and I like the fact that there are all kinds of community activities. And there are about a buh-zillion night class programs in the Twin Cities. And it looks like there is a great group of DUers there!

7. All sorts of fun things to do here. |
|
Eagan is pretty much suburbia but hey...I live out in suburbia too. Not to far from Eagan actually. St Paul and Minneapolis have darn near EVERYTHING. Anyway, welcome. We're happy to have you.

3. I'll bet you'll be fine. |
|
When you get settled come to a DU meet-up ... instant friends! also, there's plenty to do here and it may take a while but you'll find a job. we didn't get slammed as badly as a lot of places on the unemployment deal. Plus, there's a lot of fun here.
Only possible drawback: Have you been through a really cold winter before?

My friend is from Two Harbors and I spent Christmas with her family one year! The cold was nothing like I've ever known but I actually got used to it!

Nice place, but brutal in the winter!
Eagan is not too bad at all (that's Minne-soh-tan for "good"). There's a lot of bus service if you don't drive, and you're centrally located between Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Our economy is doing alright, comparatively speaking. We didn't take nearly as bad a beating during the recession, and it's still relatively affordable to live here-- although it's definately gone up over the last ten years.
One thing about native Minnesotans: most of us have lived here all our lives, and have very close social networks. Therefore, it may seem hard to get to know them socially, as they already have a tight-knit group of friends and family. Don't let that deter you, though, as there are also a lot of us who enjoy meeting new arrivals and having them as friends.
Best of luck on your moved!!!! :hi:

15. Funny you mention that. |

My friend moved to the cities after meeting her soon-to-ex-husband who lived there. She's there 8 years and has very few friends. So she's looking forward to my move there. She feels that since I'm more outgoing than she tends to be I will be OK.

You'll like it--as a state we're smarter, healthier, more progressive, and have lots of art, music, museums, theaters, shopping, sports...and weather!

I always liked about Minnesota. There seems to be a genuine concern for the people. I could be totally wrong about that but I don't think I am.
In the township where I live in PA there is no recycling...I remember going to the recycling center in Two Harbors ten years ago. And everyone recycled, not just hippies. :)
I've just been in a rut here for the past few years and I don't see anything better around the corner. I always liked Minnesota...felt like my batteries were recharged there. But I only ever visited. Living somewhere is totally different.

16. In the summer of 2003, I posted a message asking MN DUers for |
|
advice about moving back to my home state after 19 years in Oregon.
They were most kind and generous with their advice, and a couple of months after moving here in August, I got to meet some of them for the first time when socialdemocrat1981, a traveling Australian DUer, passed through town. Since then, I have attended most, if not all of the gatherings.
We are one of the most social DU groups, and you will surely be welcome at our gathrings.
It's excellent that you're moving to Eagan. They really NEED Democrats out there.
