It's expressly modeled on Free Republic, although it's of the mickey mouse species of website. Nobody in the real world pays it any attention, or in fact knows it exists. Actually, when I last looked at it a few days ago, it was dead. Let's try again ...
http://www.freedominion.caAh, no, it's up and running:
http://www.freedominion.ca/phpBB/portal.phpFree Dominion is a Canadian conservative political news forum conceptually modeled after the ground-breaking American website Free Republic. Free Dominion is the world's first proof the power of Free Republic can be imported and applied in any country where there is a desire for liberty. There is now a growing Free Britannia in the U.K., and conservative patriots in other countries are sure follow with comparable websites of their own.
Although Free Dominion was inspired by Free Republic, our primary focus is Canada and international events affecting Canada. Our interests are Canadian, our pursuit is liberty, and our principles are conservative.
I'd never heard of Connie, but she's there: www.freedominion.ca/connie.htm
Who is Connie Wilkins indeed. I'd never heard of her in my life until you asked, and I've been around politics here for over 3 decades. (The screed quoted below is obviously a parody of the Molson Canadian "I AM CANADIAN" commercials, in which Joe stands up in his flannel shirt and says things like "I believe in peace-keeping, not policing" --
http://www.coolcanuckaward.ca/joe_canadian.htm)
Who is Connie Wilkins?
I'm not a feminist, or a career woman...
And I don't live in a suburb or eat tofu, or own a Volvo...
And I don't know if Jimmy or Sally or Suzie would think I was really, really nice (although I do try to be).
I have a Prime Minister I didn't elect.
I speak English and not French.
I pronounce it 'Leftist', not 'Liberal'.
I can proudly and freely carry my Bible in my backpack...(at least for now).
I believe that true peace-keeping comes from self-policing.
That integration is not assimilation,
And that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal (why not?).
I believe an MP should be accountable,
Conservatives should get off the chesterfield,
And that a Dominion can, indeed, be FREE!
Canadians are giving away their freedoms!
The UN is not my government!
My Constitution was written in 1867.
And ALL Canadians should have the right to life and liberty!
My name is Connie...
and I AM Conservative!
And who the fuck cares, would be the reasonable response. I assume she's a force behind Free Dominion, which makes her a cipher.
Free Dominion claims to be the voice of "principled conservatism". We here will all tell you that there *are* "principled conservatives" in Canada, and they will not be found at Free Dominion. The Free Dominionites aren't conservatives, they're right wingers, and loons, and you may now forget you ever heard of them and get back to your regular programming. ;)
Oh, btw, "Dominion" is the form/title assigned to Canada when it adopted "responsible government", or home rule, in the 19th century -- a self-governing nation, i.e. with its own elected parliament and prime minister, with the Queen as head of state. Canada thus became the model for the independence of other British colonies. (Gandhi's goal in the early 20th century was for India to have the same status within the then-Empire, now Commonwealth, as Canada.)
