While It's Not Surprising, It's DISTURBING How The Corp. Media Is Ignoring RW Violence |
|
Edited on Thu Apr-08-10 02:03 PM by Beetwasher
And what I mean is not necessarily that there is no coverage of the multitude of stories lately. There is some coverage, though hardly what would happen if this was happening on the Left, but they are not connecting the dots. In fact, they seem to be going out of their way to NOT connect the dots and create a sense of false equivalence. There's is a sustained and repeated pattern of violence that seems to be escalating and it's ALL coming from these RW nuts. There have been a whole shitload of incidents and arrests lately and the connections are undeniable, and should be a BIG story. And yet, it's not.
I find it alarming and disturbing.

6. But Are They Making The Connections? |
|
Edited on Thu Apr-08-10 02:10 PM by Beetwasher
Or are they just covering individual stories as if they are stand alone?
The story is not necessarily just the individual events as they happen, it's the larger picture of ALL of these acts of violence coming from RW anti-gov't loons.

Oh please.
If it were the left where this was happening you'd see wall to wall coverage about left wing terrorism. And you know it.

19. What Connections Do You Want Them To Make? |
|
I see a lot of people alarmed by the racist and violent rhetoric coming out of the right wing. Many have connected the dots...that's why President Obama won election in 2008 and the voters kicked out the rushpublicans in '06 and '08.
I see people like Rachel Maddow, Ed Schultz and Keith Olbermann connecting the dots every day...as well as columnists like Eugene Robinson and Frank Rich and bloggers such as MediaMatters and TalkingPoints Memo. Yes, they're all progressive, but they connect the dots nightly for millions in this country. Just because they're not out at teabagger rallies screaming back doesn't mean there's a large number of people in this country who not only are connecting their own dots but don't like what they're seeing.
Personally, I just like the fact...I'll connect the dots myself, just as many others would prefer as well...

26. The False Equivelency Game... |
|
Being one whose watched and was a part of the mediaworld in a previous life, I can say that the right manipulates the coverage cause of the "golden rule"...those who own the gold, make the rules...and since our airwaves and cables are monopolized by a handful of multimedia "gatekeepers" they can and do determine what is "news" and how it is covered. "Deregulation" led to 91% of talk radio stations in this country airing right wing bile and spawned Faux Noise as a video mouthpiece of the rushpublican party. So the facts show that "fairness" when it comes to political discourse in our media is "fair and balanced" from the perspective of the ownership's pocketbook and ability to profit from "the news". Shameful commentary on how corrupt the media has become.
We're already seeing what I call the false equivelency game...better known as "fair and balanced" as the corporate media is racing back to the 60s to find inflamatory rhetoric from the left to justify the current bile spewing from the right. Or, even worse, they say that both sides do it without any proof of such hatred coming from any "left" politician and downplaying the fetid hatred spewing from elected politicians on the right. Consider this the end result of decades of right wing intimidation...the berating of the "librul media" (that never really existed) so that many inside the beltway give greater play to the right wing talking points and rhetoric in fear of getting beat up on if they don't.

the 'media' to be the ones "connecting the dots" for us? I wouldn't think so. In a lot of cases, "undeniable" connections are usually created by those looking for them.

9. "Ignoring" is probably not the right word |
|
But yes, the coverage I've seen gives the distinct impression that these are random events, disconnected from each other, with no commonality at all. Yes, some politicians have been threatened (but not identified as exclusively Democrats). And the folks arrested are just a bunch of disgruntled citizens (with no mention of their common beefs). And nobody knows how these disgruntled citizens might have formed their surprisingly similar opinions (because nobody in the public sphere is talking about violence or revolution or resistance).
And of course the clincher is the standard "What would the media be saying if this were coming the other way?" That is, if there were a bunch of leftist yahoos being egged on by Democratic elected officials and liberal and progressive media personalities to threaten Republican officials, this would bring all other reportage to a screeching halt. Big media would be focused exclusively on the threats, and every Democrat, every talking head, would be pinned down and either forced to condemn their own or be lumped in with the most extreme expressions.

to "downplay" or, as you put it, "fail to connect the dots" when public officials are threatened.
It scares me, to tell you the truth...and here I thought I was done "being scared" when Bush left office...Jeebus.

|

by using the childish "Tommy did it too" garbage to try to create a false equivalency between the behavior of those on the right and left.
Some of them have to reach back to the 1960's to try to make their case that the left is as bad as the right. And some like to claim that a mentally ill guy who threatened Eric Cantor proves the left is as bad as the right. Even though the guy who threatened him has also threatened Obama, Pelosi and Reid, and Babe the Pig. Yes, clearly that is a great example of someone on the left.
Edit - Spelling issues.
