Fans of Canceled ‘Jericho’ Mobilize With a Very Literal Protest

By ELIZABETH OLSON
Published: May 28, 2007

Soon after CBS said this month that it had canceled the drama series “Jericho,” angry fans started sending individual bags of nuts to executives at the network’s offices in New York and Los Angeles as a protest.

Then the nuts started arriving in bulk, sometimes by the truckload. It turned out that fans, some of whom started a “Save Jericho” petition drive, had also found an Internet nut seller called NutsOnline.

“When I saw the first several orders, I thought it might be credit card fraud or a prank,” said Jeffrey Braverman, head of NutsOnline. “Then I checked it out and found it was real, so I changed the site to give the fans a chance to pool their money for an order.”

With the help of a “Save Jericho” section on the NutsOnline Web site, fans began combining their contributions (which averaged $10) and last Wednesday alone more than two tons of nuts were sent to CBS. The next day, Mr. Braverman, 26, and his uncle drove the company’s black van from Linden, N.J., to Manhattan to personally deliver 1,000 pounds. By the weekend, nearly 10 tons of roasted peanuts and other nuts had arrived on CBS’s doorstep.

4. My thoughts exactly
Why do the democrats capitulate to the criminals in our White House?

Why aren't we out in mass demonstrating to get the criminals to the World Court for their War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity. Never mind the Treason and their other crimes against the Constitution and the American people.

3. Tons of food wasted in a protest
I am all for protests, but this is just a waste of good protein. Yeah, the article says CBS plans to donate the nuts, but there is so much waste in the process.

All for a tv show. Couch potatoes can stir themselves to protest the cancellation of a show, but don't blink when the democracy of their country goes up in flames.

5. Reminds me of the Michigan (?) students who protested a "no beer" rule.

9. I and my daughter are both alergic to Peanuts.
And I believe all the nut being donated are Peanuts so I don't really care how much is wasted.

6. This has worked at least twice before
Once, when the show Roswell was in danger of being cancelled - people sent small bottles of Tabasco (it was a minor plot device reoccuring throughout the show) to the producers. The other time was after the show Farscape was unexpectedly cancelled. Fans sent boxes of crackers (again, a plot device in an EXTREMELY funny episode) to the producers to try and get them to reconsider.

Both efforts were at least partially successful: Roswell was renewed, and ended up being on the air for another 2 seasons. Farscape wasn't renewed, but producers decided to do a miniseries to wrap up loose ends.

about prescription drugs, I sent back a blank note card with six pennies taped to it. It was a postage-paid envelope.

It gave me a great deal of satisfaction.
