Many people who leave Active Duty status attach themselves to a Reserve (or Guard) unit. IF they are drilling with a reserve unit once a month, they are subject to call up on Active Duty again. People who continue to drill with a reserve unit know they may be called to Active Duty. This should come as no surprise although I agree that it is often unfair to the individual and family.

Those people who opt instead to NOT participate in any way with a particular reserve unit often must be transferred to the Inactive Ready Reserve UNTIL the completion of their contract. No more.
