9-11 Monument With Commandments Unveiled in Government Building
By Mike Schneider Associated Press Writer
Published: Sep 11, 2003

BARTOW, Fla. (AP) - A 6,000-pound monument designed to honor 9-11 victims and containing an engraving of the Ten Commandments was unveiled Thursday in Polk County's government building, just weeks after Alabama's chief judge lost a fight to keep a Ten Commandments monument displayed in a state building there.
But a representative of the American Civil Liberties Union, which challenged the Alabama display, said the Polk County granite monument was quite different from the one Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore placed in the Alabama justice building.

Polk County's American Heritage Foundation Rock is topped by a replica of the Liberty Bell. Four sides of its base are carved with quotes from historical documents, such as the Magna Carta and the Declaration of Independence, and from historic figures such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and John Jay.

The Ten Commandments text is the centerpiece of the Alabama monument.

"It is obvious that this is very different from the monument that Judge Moore fought for," said Darlene Williams, chair of the ACLU of Greater Tampa. Bartow is about 40 miles east of Tampa. (snip/...)
