There are still labor unions in VZ. The ones that side with management and are run by right wingers organized the strikes in 2003.

Here at DU a few months ago, there were articles posted in which Chavez criticized the high price of oil, blaming it on chaos caused by the US in the ME. He said that the days of cheap oil are over, especially for VZ because they're tapped out of light crude and now only have the more expensive-to-process heavy crude, and because there's more demand from developing nations. But he does say that OPEC nations believe that a good balance between profits and the need to make sure that developing economies can actually develop would be at about (IIRC) $40pb.
