32. If Southerners have to make a choice between loyalty to a political
party or bigotry - the bigotry will win every time. The Democratic Party WAS the leading party of the south. As soon as JFK and LBJ showed any interest what-so-ever in making people of color equal - the Democratic Party ceased to be - as far as the average Southerner is concerned.

Us old folks are the ones that vote, and the older a Southerner is, the more likely they are to be a bigot . I remember when blacks had to ride in the back of the bus and I can still see (in my mind) Belk Department store having separate water fountains.

I don't think the average young person realizes just how alive and well bigotry and prejudice are.
