Northrop wins lead role in U.S. Army unmanned program

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Army has chosen Northrop Grumman Corp. as lead system integrator for unmanned ground vehicles under a program to better protect U.S. troops, the Los Angeles-based company said on Monday.

Northrop said its Remotec Inc. subsidiary will provide its Tactical Amphibious Ground Support (TAGS) vehicle as the main unmanned ground platform to the Army's Family of Integrated Rapid Response Equipment (FIRRE) program.

About the size and weight of a compact car, a TAGS can be manually controlled, but also uses Global Positioning System satellites, onboard sensors and point-by-point navigation to travel autonomously between points along a predetermined path.

FIRRE is intended to provide troops with a variety of modular force protection equipment, including unmanned air, ground and undersea platforms to handle perimeter security, freeing soldiers to concentrate on more strategic tasks
