From the usual hagiographic CNN blurb: Rice -- who was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and spent most of her childhood there -- said the confluence of race and poverty is a vestige of American history.

So I guess she never heard of the Sixteenth Street Church or the Edmund Pettis Bridge either.

I'm a clueless white guy who was growing up in South Carolina about the same time. And I sure heard about those places.

And don't believe the hype about her sterling career as a Provost at Stanford University, either. One of the things she did there was what most of us would call "union-busting," IIRC.
