Google appears poised to go public
FIRST OFFERING OF STOCK FOR MOUNTAIN VIEW SEARCH-ENGINE

Google appears to be gearing up for its much-awaited initial public offering, with signs pointing to the stock sale occurring in the first half of next year.

The buzz about a possible Google offering has mounted over the past few months, as investors look to the company as a sign of hope amid a dour market for tech IPOs. Some people believe a successful Google IPO would reignite the market for technology stock offerings.

<snip>

Google doesn't need the cash from an IPO for basic operations. Its business is vibrant. The Web's most popular search engine gets a steady stream of income from selling advertisements that run alongside its search results. Analysts believe Google's revenue could total $1 billion over the next 12 months.

MS making an offer sounds like a floater idea to me personally; that is, MS wants to (maybe emboldened by Oracle's overtures to PeopleSoft) but Google didn't go after them.
