Vets thankful for memories of entertainer

It was just a refueling stop in a driving South Pacific rain during World War II. Two hundred troops on a tiny island in Dutch New Guinea sat on their helmets to keep their bottoms dry and watch Bob Hope from a stage under a tarp roof.

But for Lucy Hambridge, it might as well have been the front-row seat of a Broadway show. Hope was someone from home who cared enough to come to this forgotten place and entertain them. "We were very grateful," said Hambridge, 84, sitting beneath a knitted Afghan in the Colorado Veterans Nursing Home on the Fitzsimons campus in Aurora on Monday. "It kept us in touch with the U.S.," she said. "You felt very deserted out there."

A self-described "Army brat," Hambridge had enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps at the start of the war. Throughout the metro area Monday, veterans like her remembered encounters that left them with warm memories of a comedian who came to visit despite hardships and discomforts.
